Alasdair gallops off with the supreme championship

THURSO equestrian lecturer Alasdair Matheson’s expert knowledge earned him supreme success on the opening day of the Black Isle Show, yesterday.
Cheered on by some of his college students, Mr Matheson (39) picked up a top rosette in the ridden mountain and moorland section and went on to win the overall ridden championship before going head-to-head with the overall in-hand champion to secure the show’s top award.
He has been in the final line-up before, but this was the first time he had won the overall. His winner, Dunedin Mountain Rose, an eight-year-olf mare by Kincardine Ben Macdhui, is in her first show season and couldn’t have got off to a better start. Before yesterday’s success she had claimed five championships at local shows including the supreme at the Sutherland.
A successful weekend at Banchory and Turiff shows culminated in a major success for Caithness sisters, Lisa and Carolyn Coghill who stood reserve for the ridden champion with 12-year-old mare, Stemster Millenium Bug, last year’s Black Isle supreme.
