my granny and grandad Dan and Dolina Mackenzie
are doing this John O Groats-Lands End road run in their American Peterbilt truck
to raise funds for the very deserving RNLI and Macmillan Cancer Support.

they are setting off from john o groats on friday!
they plan to be leaving a photoshoot at dunnet head around 8.30-9am then onto john o groats 9.30 for leaving 10 am.
(not 1pm like shown in the whats on diary on org, have messaged bill fernie to no avail on changing those details)

we would love to see some of you to give them a good send off from John O Groats on their fund raising journey!

come have your pics taken with the trucks and motorbikes
(there are a few friends accompaning them for part of their journey!)

meet Dan and Dolina

and donate what to can to the worthy causes.

if you cant make it,
but still want to donate,
please pm me and i will send you a link to the online registered charity site for this event,
where virgin money adds a percentage of what you donate to the cause too!
or i can give you their address for postal donations.

(would put link on here but have not heard back from admin if it is ok to do this)

hope to see you there!!

I did mention this on the org a while ago and have collected sponsorship in the old fashioned way and sent a cheque for the donations received.

Due to a hospital appointment in Inverness tomorrow we won`t make it to the send off as originally planned, but hope to see the truck on the road.

Still collecting coppers in a jar and will do until Dan comes round to collect them when they eventually return.

A gallant effort for two very worthy causes.

God speed, and haste ye back.

for those following the charity event, heres a wee update from dolina:

Left Groats on Friday went as far as Perth, got a great send off from Dunnet Head & Groats were surprised at how many people came to see us off.
We left Groats lead by Graham the piper, Herbie with the flag & the bikers from Caithness Last Chapter.
Had a great time with them all.
We would like to thank every-one who gave us money as they have been so generous.
We are now in Gretna Green , weather is brilliant.

update from the truckers last night on their virgin giving site:

"Ok folks we're at Carnford overnight. Left Carnford through Preston, Lymm, Warrington, Nunsmere, Tarpoley, Tiverton, Whitchurch and Dorrington. Arrived at Ludlow where the support car had a POLICE ESCORT as the Big Dave got lost YET AGAIN. with the co-operation of constable Andy (originally from Glasgow) Dan was phoned and informed that the police had chased the support car through Ludlow for speeding.

while we booked a room, andy went to the truckstop and asked Dan had he seen the car he'd been chasing. Dan perverted the course of justice by denying that he'd seen us and was duly put in handcuffs along with big Dave and tossed into the back of the police landrover. (photos to follow) WHO SAID THIS WOULD BE A QUIET TRIP!! once Dan realised it was a set-up, his heart restarted and came back down to earth with a small bump.

Hopefully today will be quieter and we're off to Weston-supermare to do some serious fund-raising.

Thanks to all the generous folk everywhere to our followers"

With some help from Torvaig and annmarie we dashed down to Weston and met up with the Truckers.
What a sight !! There they were on the front at Weston Super Mare and all looking very happy. They are coping well
and enjoying themselves.
Now I am going to ask another kind friend to put some pics on.....

Good luck to all the folk on this trip, it's a great effort and they deserve all the support they can get.

Thank you Trinkie for keeping a true Caithness welcome alive in your adopted part of England for any of us "Far Northerners" who may be passing through.

Don't make us jealous with your talk of it being "very hot". It was 14C tops in Wick today and rained constantly. :(

Here's the link to the photos which LavenderBlue2 posted up :-

just to let everyone know
(becuase some might wonder when they don't seen them in the paper having completed the john o groats lands end run)

dan and dolina will be presenting the monies raised in sept, and it will be in the paper for all to see.

this is because they are holding a charity disco, to end their fund raising trip, on the 10th sept
and want to present the grand total to the rnli and macmillan cancer support once this money has been added to the total raised.

(i will post more details of the charity disco and buffet very soon.)

Thank you for that update.

I have been keeping coppers in a jar (One pence and two pence pieces, just incase some smarty pants here thinks I am holding the police force hostage) and will continue to add to this until the disco.

Maybe some other orgers would do the same. I have a few pounds now and haven`t noticed the difference to the purse.

pm me for address or contact no should you wish to speak to, or donate to dolina or dan folks. :)

Hats off for raising money, but driving a truck from Groats to Lands End is not exactly the most exciting challenge! I guess there are plenty lorry drivers in Orkney and Caithness that do that week in, week out (maybe not quite to Lands End, but probably rack up more miles scooting back and fore across England all week). Running unladen without a trailer probably makes it a fairly cushy drive, for a vehicle that is built to clock up a few million km in its life! And what, pray, does a support car do for a sodding great tractor unit, that probably has enough room behind the cab to carry half a dozen support cars?

However, well done if its raised some money for good causes. Hmmm, now what could I try - A sponsored sleep? Maybe a sponsored "mince and tattie dinner making"?

May I suggest a sponsored silence [disgust]

a tad rude maybe?!
and funnily enough, dan IS a lorry driver as his job and has been for many many years!
this was done as an act of kindness to raise money for two well worthy causes and for the experiance.
dan and dolina always collect for these particular causes at all events they attend as they are close to their hearts.
the support car was leading the way to keep them all on the right track as they did not take the usual john o groats lands end route and helped raising attention to the run. which brought more donations.
i for one, am very proud of their achievements.

Trying not to be - Just unusual for someone to do a sponsored job! Good though that money has been raised in the process!

Annemarie, take no heed of the negative posts. Anyone who actually gets off their butt to raise funds for charity and highlights their profile deserves applauding. :)

Orkney-negative-about Caithness-person, please accept that some good things do happen in Caithness.

I wish someone would sponsor me to do my job!

Surely this was a busman`s holiday for Dan as the roadtrip was done in his own vehicle, not one belonging to the company he works for?

Sponsoring myself now to shut up.............more pennies in the jar!

Yip..well done Dan and Dolina.

Not everyone would give up their summer holidays to travel the length of the UK visiting different places of interest...especially with the price of the fuel these days...it must have cost a small fortune for them and their support team vehicles.

Hope they were able to have a more relaxing time travelling home and enjoyed more of their summer break before going back to work.

Again....well done.

Followed Dan and Dolina up Berridale in my MG Midget. Well done! You must have raised a fair bit for the lifeboats. They caught up with us just after we pulled in to our drive in Latheron, so they must be nearly home by now.

Go easy bud...

Yeah sure there are truckers out there who do that sorta journey on a frequent basis but it shouldnt be hard to see that this journey is just that little bit different.

Well done to them even if they are only half way through their journey!!
