Laptop freezes after turning on

When I turn on my laptop the desktop comes up but when I go to select e.g. Firefox or Outlook the damn thing has frozen and nothing happens, I then need to turn it off via the on/off button, turn it on again and its ok. This seems to be happening more and more.
I have an Acer Aspire 8735G.
Can anyone help please?

download and run glary utils.

i'd also look at putting it up on an online virus scanner too.

try the windows live online scanner or the microsoft security essentials site too
