Wilkinson's! I used to work in one while I was at college and I loved it! They're fantastic to work for and even better for customers. If you've never heard of them have a look at their website http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/.

PS I'm heading down to Wales tomorrow and will be paying a few visits to my local Wilko's if anyone wants anything bringing back up!

It may seem funny, but, I would like it as a little indoor market..sort of a place you could buy everything in individual stalls so to speak....sort of like the market on a saturday but "bigger" with local meat, fish, haberdashery that sort of thing..

exactly my thoughts!
an all year round, all weather market for above items you've listed, :o)
also a good way for local new business's to start as they'd be starting small to test the water before trying a shop!

we do have a market, each saturday in the market sq but there are only 3 or 4 stalls. How will you be able to fill a indoor market of say 10 or 15? Caithness does not have a proper green grocers and have not had for a large number of years. Why is that, yes Co-Op & Tesco's but mainly because the people won't go there. Puffin Croft does well at what it does in a specialised market but i am not sure if they would want to rent space in a 6 day, 52 week market. The fish shop in the High St is up for sale, did not last long. Why, no customers i presume. Wick has 2 butchers so does need more? They already have to compete with the small farms selling meat & the 3 supermarkets.

Those wanting an Adsa or Sainsbury's, could Wick support a 4th supermarket without further damaging the few local shops that we already have?

Also remember it would also compete with the likes of local shops in Castletown & Latheronwheel. What goes into Haldaines needs to be carefully thought out so that more harm is not done to the other 'local' shops.

i was leaning more towards "new business"

ie: like locals who

make their own jewellery
knit and sew
make their own jams etc
paint/art work

there are lots of small business working from home that might be interested in working from a small unit that way they could work and sell/ show of wares at the same time

something along the idea of the vistorian market in inverness, maybe seperated into small affordable units for business start up.

there are plenty folk that'd love to have thier own shop but are scared of the risks involved with starting big.

22-Jul-11, 10:46
Annemarie, your idea would have less impact on existing shops. Others did say meat, fish, etc. What i would love to see is a proper Deli in Wick, they could sell local cheeses & jams, etc.

The market would have to have a lot of investment as the rent & rates would have to be very low to let these businesses start. I do like it but not sure if it would flourish but would love to see it. My wife makes quilts and would be a nice place for her to sell them.

I have to agree smaller sep shops in that place would be great and low cost it would atract lots of smaller traders which could be good for the area as i have looked at a few shops its the poll tax that kills it but you can get help now with that in the first year what about highlands and highlands enterprise buying it and turning it into smaller units for traders then renting them out it would make money to be able to help others over time no more big supermarkets please a freezer shop would be good though

Ditto! one of these are badly needed in this area, because the existing supermarkets range of frozen produce is woefully lacking in variety.

I just thought it would be nice to have all the wee enteprises in one area .... like the smokehouse produce, the farm butchers...greystones etc, fiona poulsons cakes(to name one), caithness jams, far north cheeses(there is a few different ones), local eggs, soaps, antler and wood turned items etc(and some new faces).
I know they are all sold in different shops like in halkirk and frasers etc..
And most go round the local shows..
But sometimes its hard to find their produce when you need/want it!

The original post asked what shop you wanted to take over the empty haldenes shop....not what would happen!
My posts only reflect my views on what I would want (and use)not what will happen!
I didnt win the Euromillions....so I cant help make that idea happen!

I try and go in a few times a year especially at birthday times etc...and yes I do buy stuff...as its different.when I visit I buy ..
But its not an easy shop to visit with the kids...otherwise I would pop in more often! The aisles are too narrow for the buggy, but, I wouldnt like little hands touching the things on display, and the steps are a bit of a pest...otherwise I would be in there more often!

In a nutshell, a recession.

Small provincial towns are only of interest to large multi-retailers when they are cash rich. If they think the market is going to decline for a while, they will not proceed with ventures in 'higher risk' areas.

Well with the rent for Haldenes at £112,000 per annum it's only going to be a major player who can afford to take the premises on - believe me i've tried to rack my brains on how you could manage to get your hands on it and make something of it - but unless you have Hundreds of thousands in the bank then whose able to take the risk on the rent alone on that kind of project!

I like Waitrose but you have as much chance of that as Caithness being made the capital of the UK. Sorry but the transportation costs for them would be horrific. Where is the closest, Aberdeen? To come to one small supermarket this far north, nope.

To be honest i can't really see anyone wanting to move into it, except if it is broken down into small units but then again would their be enough small businesses wanting to move into it?

i think it would be an idea place for an auction room as theres plenty space and room in car park for people to park and ample space at the back for loadin and unloadin stuff ..as we all have stuff we would like to sell...

I don't know; what am I missing here? All this clammering for big supermarkets! What more do we need? Good heavens there is only so much you can put in the deep freezers, fridges and larders!

For those who like good, fresh food, the farm shops, local bakers, butchers, crofts etc., are the way to go. If you have enough money to spend on "treats", soft drinks, fancy cakes etc., you have enough to shop discriminately at good food retailers. Maybe then we won't have so many obese kiddies and adults who are a drain on other resources such as hospitals, dieticians etc., and more people would lead healthy lives instead of everything revolving round more and more goodies, more and more pc games, kinders and the like, a multitude of toys etc., leading to us needing much bigger houses and cars and garages to hold it all.

Mind you, fairly keeps the charity shops and auction sales going and the binmen in a job, and the council recycling depots etc., .... bring them on!

Would like to see an indoor market where Haldanes was with the provision for folks who do crafty stuff on a more seasonal basis to rent a pitch as and when required.

Home Bargains are looking to expand into the Highlands and the former Haldanes property would be perfect for them. Give the Tesco/Co-op cartel some food for thought.

I would like to think that local enterprise would be considered for lower rental charges than the big mulitnationals and would be good for the local economy. Worth a try approaching the appropriate contacts in the council?

When a recession really does hit an area Costcutters tend to be the supermarket of choice- but when they move in, the big guns oftern downsize or even withdraw.
of the
the other end of the market is Waitrose and M&S Food stores- but for those to happen, you need an affluent middle class presence- ie at least 50 percent earning over £40k

However I've noticed that it is the most expensive houses that appear to be selling as affluent people from the south decide to sell up and see what their cash can purchase in the Highlands- so those two establishments might well be on the agenda

I think that a outlet similar to Tons of Fun in Inverness may work ok, you can go in, have food and kiddies can play all day for a set fee....

i know that inverness is much bigger than wick, but that place is to the door everytime i was in, and people up here are always looking for somewere to take the kids for food

Missy Wick
23-Jul-11, 16:38
I understand that everyone seems to want another food outlet.

What about an indoor play area for kids. It has been an awfully long summer holidays with nothing to do or nowhere to go with the kids. Playzone in Inverness is fantastic, and I def think this kind of thing would take off in Caithness - however you need somewhere really big to carry it off.

Just back from our holiday in Wales where we visited Home Bargains for the first time. We were shocked by the low prices. They have a far wider range of non food products than Lidl so I could see them coexisting ok. Semi Chem, the Factory Shop and the 99p shop would probably feel the pressure though.
