£20 million re-development for Scrabster

SCRABSTER harbour is set for a £20 million makeover.
Glasgow-based R. J. McLeod have won the contract, designed to retain the port’s status as one of the busiest in the north.
Apart from boosting existing tanker, fishing and cargo trade, the scheme is also aimed at building up offshore oil traffic and servicing the new marine energy ventures in the Pentland Firth and off Orkney.
Far north development agencies view the inner harbour’s redevelopment as a key part of the drive to offset the 2,000 jobs being lost as Dounreay runs down.
The work will include the creation of a new tanker berth, parallel to the ice plant, and open up the entrance to the inner harbour which presents a difficulty, at time, accommodating tankers. The inner basin will be dredged to 15ft while a new 13,500 ft quay will be created on the south side.
In addition, about half of the inner harbour will be reclaimed to provide 11,000 square metres of lay-down area while a 1,000 tonne heavy lift pad is being installed. The contract will also make life much easier for visiting white fish fleet.
