Any idea? And why?

usually it is the person who opens the thread unless there have been reports about the thread then a moderator may step in and lock it - that is my understanding.

In my experience, on these forums, it's either the OP or the Admin/Mods.

The reasons vary.
Sometimes the OP closes the thread when they are bombarded with answers they don't want to hear and/or are faced with points outwith their debating skills. Sometimes the Admin/Mods close the thread when the thread has degenerated to such a negative point that there is nothing to be gained by keeping it open.

I disagree with the former but salute the latter.

I hope this goes some way to answer your question, David. :)

Threads are also closed by the originator if they're selling or looking for something, and have found or disposed of it.
