I have used this system for some time and it does get rid of unwanted phone calls.

TPS
Telephone Preference Service,
5th Floor,
Haymarket House,
1 Oxenden Street
London,
SW 1Y 4EW

tele: 020 7766 4420

If you happen to get such a call, then just say you are with TPS and they quickly hang up.

Here's a great tip for dealing with annoying telesales calls to your home.

Keep a football referees whistle handy by the phone. When they are in mid flow, blow the whistle as hard as you can into the mouthpiece (keeping your own ear away from the earpiece).

Rapid end to call as the caller hurles their headset off - and takes the next month of work with tinitus.

We registered our number with that place to stop the junk calls and it did help it cut the number of calls right down. I usually forget to ask where they got our number from when I get the odd call. Depending on my mood I will either string them along for ages before hanging up or just hang up straight away.

You can also stop some of the paper junk that comes through your letterbox by registering here: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/
As with the telephone service, it takes about six months, but it is worth it. Saves the rainforests (and the postmans back) too!

Failing all those options, use two very simple words.

...I usually forget to ask where they got our number from when I get the odd call...

They are computer generated - I had cold callers ring me several times and I'm ex directory. When I asked to speak with a supervisor I asked how they got my number and was informed that the get lists churned out by a computer and they just start at the top and work their way through it.
I have also signed up to TPS and haven't had a call since.
