Ok on a discussion on a weather forum, people are putting up local sayings and words for weather.
The only one i could think of was 'driech' - which i take to be a grey dull damp day.
Are there any old caithnesian words for anything else?
(don't even know if driech is local or not  sorry).

Driech was a word used all the time in the N East of England by the weather man to describe dull dreary weather. Funny how a lot of expressions from N E England are in use up here

"Dreich" IMHO is one of the most descriptive Scots words I have ever come across, and I have lots of fun on my tour guiding, by teaching the Visitors who come to Edinburgh how to pronounce this word, a bus full of various nations all saying the word out loud, breaks down all barriers, and gets a lot of laughs.

I always refer to 'smoorie rain' as 'weet rain' as it seems to soak you in seconds! :(

On ITV Tyne/Tees TV our local weatherman is Scottish. A while ago, he used to work at Wick Airport for the Met Office department (I think) and he is forever using Caithness terms to describe the weather. Must bamboozle the NE viewers. (just read the thread properly and this has already been mentioned, so sorry)

I am from Ross-Shire and the word Dreich means the same down there.
