I am trying to research the old lookout (white octagonal) tower at south head Wick, and I am struggling to find any information on this iconic landmark built in 1812 so 199 years old, any information would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone has any photo's that I could copy and return that would be fantastic. Thanks.[para]

Have you tried Historic Scotland? Or the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments? Both have their own websites but you can also look up multiple records on their joint map based search which you can see at www.pastmap.org.uk. It's free to register.

Another source of information might be the New Statistical Account which you can access here: http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/. There might be a mention of the lookout but there may not.

Am Baile might have some records: www.ambaile.org.uk (http://www.ambaile.org.uk). You can also search past copies of the John O'Groat Journal from the site.

If you haven't been to the Heritage Centre that is well worth a try as well as the local section in the library. There might be some photos in the Johnston Collection: http://www.johnstoncollection.net/default.aspx

Good luck with your research. It would be interesting to learn what you find out.

I'd definitely start at the Wick Heritage Centre.

It was up for sale with Georgsons about 10 years ago, don't know who owns it now.

Are you sure about the 1812 date? that seems very early considering that Pulteneytown Harbour had only just been completed, and long before the Coastguard station (which was originally the South Head Battery) opened up. It would be interesting to know where you found that date
