Took bairns to the cairns today and would you believe after crawling in we found some idiot has spray painted initials inside a cairn and scratched names on stones inside as well!
Even my 11yr old 8yr old and 5yr old thought it was terrible! Just makes me mad!!!!

this kind of vandalism annoys me even more than spraying on the side on a new building...... [evil]

these structures (not just the cairns but many other precious local places of historical interest etc) have stood the test of time,
and we are fortunate enough to be able to see, enjoy and learn from them today, and some mindless scrot comes along and defaces it out an act of boredom or hilarity.[evil]

they dont deserve the world they've been given..... [disgust]

If you notify Historic Scotland's Properties in Care department in Edinburgh they will take measures to remove the graffiti. The sooner it's done the easier / more successful it is to remove.

Because I was responding to a particular point about people south of the border. I would never assert that there was no graffiti south...

Man has been graffiti-ing (??!) walls since the dawn of, well er, man. What do you think all those cave paintings are?

I'm not saying it should be applauded, just that we should not be surprised or overly outraged.

Metalattakk, there seems to me to be a difference between cave paintings which seem to have very deep spiritual and cultural roots, expressing what earlier peoples thought of their relationship with nature and the spirit world, and some bored neep who finds him/her/itself in Camster and decides to leave its pathetic mark.Even the Viking runes in Maeshowe are classier than that.Rant over, must be getting old...

Well as Croft builders are mainly responsible for destroying, damaging, or eradicating many ancient sites because they couldn't be bothered to quarry their own stone...............:Razz

I see now that thieves have now stolen the 2 brass gates on the big cairn. Probably for scrap metal.

Bit of a difference between ancient man using the only canvas available to him, to depict an event or process - and some dullard blatantly vandalising something that is clearly not theirs to deface.

I love it when people play the "we were all cavemen" card to try to justify mindless actions - as if evolution never actually happened.
