JOBS SAFE FOR THE MOMENT
CLASSROOM assistants have secured a temporary reprieve after they were told by Highland council that their jobs would be safeguarded into 2012.
The 344 posts were due to be axed, to save £715,000 as part of the authority’s administration’s budget cuts. However, the council performed an 11th-hour U-turn at their budget meeting.
Instead, a working group has been set up to review primary education with the aim of making changes before the new term begins in August. It was revealed that letters had been sent out to the hundreds of classroom assistants, informing them that savings would be found to enable them to keep their jobs until the end of March 2010, at least.
