"I jumped at the chance" says the man who resigned

FORMER Wick Academy co-manager, Richard Hughes, will continue to play a leading role in the team’s affairs, after all, despite having resigned along with the other half of the dual set-up, Ian Munro, saying it was time for new hands at the helm.
Hughes was invited to join new manager DavieKirkwood as his assistant and “jumped at the chance”. He described it as “a great honour”.
Richard, a diehard Scorrie, who played a leading role on thepark in Academy’s formative years in the Highland League, before moving into management, had been rumoured as a candidate for the managership. Another Harmsworth Park development, is that Gary Manson has been appointed a player-coach.
Noel Donaldson comments: “The two-tier management set-up makes a lot of sense. Tichie’s knowledge of the team will be invaluable in helping the new boss settle in and shape the side, and I daresay, Richard will learn a thing or two from Davie Kirkwood’s vast experience. The new season promises to be an exciting one and perhaps we’ll see a return to Academy’s halcyon days when attendances soared up the hundreds.”
There were five contenders for the manager’s post but Mr Kirkwood was head and shoulders above the field with extensive experience of playing and coaching at Scottish premier level. He lives in the Black Isle and is Academy’s second Ross-shire manager, the first being Don Cowie, prior to the Hughes/Munro era.
