Academy nets new manager with a wealth of experience and passion

WICK ACADEMY has a new manager. He is Dave Kirkwood who comes with excellent Scottish premier league credentials and is charged with the challenge of turning the club’s ailing fortunes on the field of play, around.
His appointment ends weeks of deliberation by the club’s executive committee, and speculation by the fans, keen to know who would replace co-managers Richard Hughes and Ian Munro. They stood down, officially at the end of a lack-lustre season which saw them finish in the basement of the Highland League table, saying it was time for new blood to take the team forward.
Dave’s has an impressive track record and Academy club secretary, Alan Farquhar commented: “The committee are united in their view that Davie has the proven ability, coaching experience and aptitude to improve the team and we are delighted to have such a highly respected coach working with the club. His passion and desire to join it, was evident during all the discussions we had with him.”
Kirkwood began his career in 1983, when he signed for East Fife and had spells with Rangers, Hearts, Airdrie, and Raith Rovers where he won a Scotland Under 21 cap, under Craig Brown.
He was head youth coach at Raith Rovers, Rangers and Ross County where he demonstrated an excellent level of coaching ability and man-management skills. His coaching credentials include a UEFA Pro licence.
“These qualities were a major contributory factor in the selection process for the new manager’s position, said Mr Farquhar who added: “Wick Academy is both delighted and excited by David’s appointment and we hope the supporters will be too. We feel that this appointment illustrates that we are determined and very serious about becoming a stronger force in the Highland League. We believe that David’s experience will enhance the quality of our talented young squad and, hopefully, he will maintain the continuity of development and positive work initiated by Richard and Ian and help the players develop both individually and collectively.”
Academy paid tribute to the former co-managers for “all their hard work and commitment” and expressed the hope that they would remain involved with the club.
