Police want to arrest cyclists' attention
for a police welfare charity endeavour
CYCLISTS in Caithness are among wheelers in the Highlands being asked to take part in a ‘spin’ for a police charity.
It is being organised by a senior officer, to raise money for the Northern Constabulary Benevolent and Welfare Fund.
Officers and staff from Northern Constabulary are hoping that there will be no lack of volunteers to join them in the sponsored cycle, from Fort William to Inverness on Saturday 2 July 2011.
Chief Superintendent Julian Innes said: "Last year 20 of us got on our road bikes and cycled from Wick and Thurso to Inverness to raise money for the Benevolent and Welfare Fund. It was a great day with a little suffering for a good cause. Over £2000 was raised thanks to the generosity of our colleagues, friends and family.
He added: “The main aim was to raise the profile of the fund which does a lot of good work, silently, for officers when they are in need of support. The fund also gave over £8000 to retired officers' widows at Christmas time. The £85 each widow receives reminds them that they are still part of the extended police family and at least once a year we are thinking about them. Almost every recipient writes to thank the fund for their ongoing support at Christmas time."
The chief superintendent added: "Throughout the year individuals do a great job raising money for the fund. Given the interest and success of last year's cycle, this year's event will be an off road cycle from Fort William to Inverness.”
The distance will be a little over 80 miles and will be very challenging for most folk taking part to complete in one day. There will be a half route and a quarter route to open up the day to everyone who has a mountain bike. There's still time to build up the miles to make your effort on 2 July a little more enjoyable and a lot less painful."
Northern Constabulary supports Scotland’s Healthy Working Lives so join in; do yourself, Northern Constabulary and the Benevolent and Welfare Fund some good. Whilst the main goal is to cycle the entire 79 mile route on the day, participants can choose to complete any part of the route by prior arrangement.
Part 1 ¿ Fort William to Fort Augustus, 35 miles, starting 0800 arriving at 1200/1300.
Part 2 ¿ Fort Augustus to Drumnadrochit, 23.5 miles, 1300 to 1600.
Part 3 ¿ Drumnadrochit to Inverness, 20 miles, 1600 to 1800.
The times are approximate as it is not a race and the slowest on the day will dictate the overall pace. There will be support at these points but those taking part will be more or less self-sufficient during each part.
In addition to those committing to cycle the route, volunteers are needed to form part of a back-up team. Anyone who wishes to participate in the cycle or assist with the backup team should contact Julian as soon as possible.
A Just Giving website will be set up this year and individual sponsorship forms will also be available. Anyone interested should send an email to julian.innes@northern.pnn.police.uk in the first instance.
