it's a human thing ... dogs only need clothing such as winter coats etc. if it's really cold

no I don't - it's simply humanising the dog and there's no reason for it. they're dogs, not kids

Completely pointless unless its for a health reason, or practical. My greyhounds have thin skin and fur so have waterproof coats for the winter and whenever it rains.

But there's no need for dogs to be wearing dresses, bikinis, tutu's etc.

Shoes are OK if really needed, like those who live in very cold places and icy ground affects dogs paws.

I got a great 'cool' coat for Benjy and it's been great for the really hot weather we've enjoyed these past few days. I'm sure people must have been looking though and wondering why on earth he was wearing a coat!lol

As for clothing I'm not a fan but as long as it doesn't make the dog uncomfortable I don't mind.:) By the way, t-shirts can actually calm anxious dogs.

If its raining my two get their coats put on - to save me from spending so much time, energy drying them and dirtying their towels on our return. Being terriers their bellies are fairly near the ground, with the coats they have their chest and half belly area are kept dry as well as their backs, certainly saves me a lot of cleaning and they feel warmer and drier too.
The oldest one I have to laugh at - if it is too wet and windy, he just turns and runs for home, no amount of calling or offering treats will make him change his mind, gives you a dirty look and off he scarpers. He knows when he has had enough and wants his home comforts

I don't see the harm in it if otherwise they're treated as dogs. What I don't agree with is the whole wearing coats thing and the dog is panting with the heat - can owners not see that the dog is too hot? Same with horses - I put rugs on my horses this winter for the sole reason that my neighbours had threatened to report me to SSPCA - it lasted 3 days as the poor things were actually sweating underneath despite the snow...

Depends on the reason. Don't agree with dressing them up for the sake of it or for fun.
My Dane has to have coats on or Pj's on through the winter - he feels the cold very easily and would be skinnier than he already is if I didn't give him some artificial heat. He also needs thick winter coats for outside for the same reason.

He's also cut his pad from running with me so I would consider some kind of shoe protection for him if it continues to happen!

I dont like the "fashion clothes" for pets, but I see the need for clothes for heat retaining and waterproofing etc.
So for the pets comfort clothes are ok...
But for just accessorising the dog to match your own outfit thats just sad!
I have had the need to use doggie footwear (broken glass found after the cuts) and our old spaniel had a few fetching halterneck tops to wear (lump removal) to stop him getting his wound mucky and keep his dressing on, but, we have not needed coats, jackets and definately not the fashion accessories....if not needed for medical/welfare reasons, why do it?...its not cool or really clever as it only adds to the washing...and to be honest looks silly.

Why are people so opposed to it? If it's not harming the dog, what is the problem?

It looks silly?
Next there will be doggie nailvarnish and perfume....

What next...cant pets just be animals anymore?

It's a bit of fun - not harming them... And who says it looks silly? That is just your opinion. The owner might think it looks lovely ;)

The reason being Leanne that those owners who dress their dogs up for fun, to accessorise or because 'it looks cute' are usually the owners who humanise the dog as well and THAT is asking for all sorts of problems.

The majority of dogs do not need clothing, in fact it can be quite harmful due to the fact that dogs cannot sweat and so can over heat very quickly. Although you do have the idiots who not only dress their dogs up but for some reason believe said dog no longer wants to use the legs nature gave them and are carried everywhere in colour coordinated bags. Bizarre!

Does this count as dressing up your pet? He doesn't look to upset by it.

I don't like seeing dogs dressed up because the owner wants to make a fashion statement but will admit to buying some dog t-shirts for Brodie to wear after his shunt op, kept his shaved belly a bit warm in the snow and also he left stitches alone when he was wearing it - and he did look cute!

You haven't answered my question, merely repeated what I have said...

If an owner wants to dress their dog up to 'look cute' and the dog isn't mentally or physically harmed by it, where is the harm? I personally don't do it, but hey ho. Who are we to judge someone who obviously cares about their animal? Maybe instead of berating owners for being nice to their dogs, people should put more effort into the owners that actually mistreat the dogs.
