ok, so heres a question for ye's....

so yer on a boat, a great beeg boat, up on 'e top deck, hevin a walk roond an' a fag or whativer. 'e waves are beeg an' its kwite stormy.

all o' a sudden, ivrything freezes.....except yersel!

'e people aroond ye hev frozen, 'e waves hev stop'd in mid air an 'e boat isna movin.

then 'iss manie comes over til ye an' says, "lets sit doon, am goin til gie ye two options til think aboot."

ye's go over til a bench an sit doon.

he continues, "so 'iss boat is goin til hit an iceberg in a whilie, hunders o' people are goin til be killed. there is one thing that ye can do til stop 'iss fie happenin....ye can jump overboard, commit suicide. 'e boat will hev til turn back an' noone will be any wiser aboot what wis aboot til happen.
if however ye dina jump, 'e boat will hit 'e iceberg an ye will be on 'e first rescue boat an' live in relativly guid health til yer in yer 90's."

so what wid ye do, i wonder?

It's the best solution.

If he knows all that stuff and is deliberately going to allow it to happen then he deserves no more than a swift kick and tip him overboard.

Who does he think he is anyway?

Wur Trix does speak English actually (she is just observing the "Caithness Accent" ) !! Why do you feel you have to "get" at her accent(:confused).....most people on here really enjoy her "blethers" and also are encouraging her to write a book.....? IMHO - she's an intelligent person, and no, I do not know her, nor have ever met her !

If Trix speaks English, I presume Trix can write in English. I find it annoying to have to spend time reading dialects when we already have a language most of us are happy and able to communicate with.

"If Trix speaks English, I presume Trix can write in English. I find it annoying to have to spend time reading dialects when we already have a language most of us are happy and able to communicate with."

A person who is moved to make a remark such as the one above is not likely to make a decent companion on a desert island, a good pub, or anywhere other than the "Mr. Pooter Home For Joyless Pedants".

A person reading the remark he made about our Trix is in danger of receiving a vernacular suggestion implying either sex and travel, or of putting his head in the proximity of a seething saucepan.....

Still, one derives a crumb of comfort from the fact that people with attitudes demonstrated by the quotation above tend to carry their own prisons around with them.

For life.

Having given the matter a nanosecond's consideration, and having come to the conclusion that the complainant has not a moment's purchase upon comprehension of Scots in the vernacular, I wish to associate myself entirely with the remarks so eloquently set out above by my friend with the wee horns.

English?

O truant Muse what shall be thy amends,
For thy neglect of truth in beauty dyed?
Both truth and beauty on my love depends:
So dost thou too, and therein dignified:
Make answer Muse, wilt thou not haply say,
'Truth needs no colour with his colour fixed,
Beauty no pencil, beauty's truth to lay:
But best is best, if never intermixed'?
Because he needs no praise, wilt thou be dumb?
Excuse not silence so, for't lies in thee,
To make him much outlive a gilded tomb:
And to be praised of ages yet to be.
Then do thy office Muse, I teach thee how,
To make him seem long hence, as he shows now.

John, I would agree with you except I believe some of the Orgers are trying to attract attention. They get it with the comments they make.

That is undoubtedly true. However, to place the 'English' language into a strait jacket of definition is to close a sluice gate to its rawness and creativity. Trix is not speaking English anyway - she is speaking Scots and a dialect of it which she does remarkably well.

This is English too;

he was
oald as the fells
street as an arske’s arse
sharp as whins
whick as a lop
wild as winter thunner
nice as an otter

and his throat war middlen slippy
and he is deed as a steann

but not gone
but not gone

Can you read it?

Is it wrong?

Should it be censored? Or censured?

For someone who does not know the difference between your and you're, you are'nt half saying a lot about proper use of English.

What I could not understand at first was why you felt that you had to comment on Trix's posts. You did not like them but no-one forced you to read them. You have obviously no time for dialect and take a rather tight view of what constitutes 'English'.

So, taking into consideration that there is no coercion involved, I have to speculate that you are trolling for reactions.

And if I am right then the watchword here should be "Ne pas nourrir le troll"

I have spelling mistakes in my eye - as do most here. I do not claim to be any authority on the use of English - or Scots - or dialect.

But your propensity to point out that which you find objectionable or erroneous indicates that you are either a pedant or a troll.
