Attempts to prevent mass grounding

A CAITHNESS man is one of the rescue team trying to prevent a mass stranding of pilot whales in South Uist.
The whales, about 100 of them were spotted in Loch Carnan, on Thursday afternoon, and some were said to have cuts to their heads. These may have been caused by attempts by the whales to strand themselves on the rocky foreshore of the sea loch.
Alasdair Jack is among members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, which fears that the whales could die in a massive beaching.
Mr Jack, who is the BDMLR’s Scottish organiser, said: “ Rather than try to stop them coming ashore, we would let them come ashore and then try to deal with the situation as it arose.”
The rescue organisation has got several sets of pontoons, which is the standard whale refloation equipment, and more are on the way.
