Don't think you need drink for Caithness tartan to go for the eyes - its a bit garish!!

If you stand about 1 foot from the monitor, focus on a point and stare for 30 seconds, you can see a 3D image appear of Wick Harbour ...
Only kidding, it's quite subdued. Nice really. Just wouldn't want it on my sofa.

I don't find the Caithness tartan very appealing.

But I was fair taken by the McAllans Men in Kilts (http://www.mcallans.co.uk/downloads/download.asp?catid=9) calendar. I'm thinking of doing a Szin in Kilts 2007 calendar.

I think it's a bit too close to the Burberry tartan and hence only suitable for Caithness Chav's [lol]

What are you favourite tartans? I have been enjoying playing with the tartan search thing on the McAllans website

Tartan & Clan Search (http://www.mcallans.com/info/info.asp?page=B)

Tha Braveheart one is pretty cool, so is the plain black though I guess thats not really a tartan.

I am really impressed with the rest of the McAllans website as there is a lot of good stuff on there, it's good to see that a local business can make a good go of going global!

Not too sure if I like the Caithness tartan myself, one of my friends sons had a kilt made up in it, it actually looked quite good. It is supposed to incorporate all the colours of Caithness county, and as such may be worn by any Caithnessian, many of whom are not as lucky the Sinclairs, Gunns or Sutherlands, all of which have many variations of their particular clan tartan to choose from.

I don't think the Caithness tartan looks great in the pic, but I'm sure it would be nicer when actually worn. Great to have a look at the MacAllans website, as I didn't know they had one. Thanks for the link to it. :)

There is always the possibility of doing a "Moderators in Kilts" calendar. The profits could be used to buy some new chairs for the Org Pub. It gets kind of crowded in there some nights.

I'm going ahead with my own fairytale calendar. I have the photographer, 12 money-spinning locations, and a brand-new set of 12 kilts - the trendy new ones that you don't iron. Hopefully, the calendar will be a goldmine. It's entitled Rumpledkiltszin 2007. :D

Don't forget it's not only the Scots wear kilts, other Celtic folk do too, see http://www.alanrichards.org/cornishtartan.htm (http://www.alanrichards.org/cornishtartan.htm) - the National one's nice.

The use of kilts in Cornwall dates back several centuries.

Worked in McAllans many moons ago with the man who co-devised it. The red is for the sunsets, the 2 browns are for the moorland, the lilac is for the heather, the black is for the peat and finally the yellow is for the beaches. It may not be the bonniest tartan but it pretty well sums up the Caithness landscape!

I also like Canuck's idea of a "Moderators in Kilts" calendar. Who will be the first Mod of the Month, I wonder??

If you thought the Caithness tartan was a bit, er, "different", then take a look at this one (http://members.shaw.ca/meninkilts/images/Guys/Aliinhiskilt.jpg), or re-acquaint yourself with the essentials of Scottish macho manhood as manifested in Archie of B'mory (http://www.worldofbubble.com/images/balamory_archie.jpg).

Pre-release samples from both calendars will be posted here when available. Golach isn't sure about appearing in Mods in Kilts, but we're still working on him - that's him in Connie's pic, btw.

Seriously, well, semi-seriously, today is evidently Kilt Day (http://www.kiltday.com/index.htm). Is anyone wearing one?

http://www.mcallans.co.uk/images/products/96_large_caith.jpg

I have to admit that my immediate thought was "It's a bit fyachie!" (I can't remember if that word is used in Caithness or not, but my parents are from Aberdeenshire. If a colour didn't appeal to my mother she'd often say "I dinna like that colour, it's afa fyachie!"

The tartan does look a bit better made up as a kilt in the McAllan's pic (http://www.mcallans.com/shop/viewproduct.asp?cat=13&id=39&detailed=Y), and is probably even better in reality. I do like the way the colours sum up the Caithness landscape, as in SNOWDOG's description, though!

One thing's for sure, it's infinitely more appealing that the two "tantalizing" tartans that DrSzin referred us to!

In my line of work, all moderators wear lace, so I never even noticed that part. I am sure that the same techies could make that go away. They might even be able to change the hat.

Yes, I was in the Wick shop the other day and they have that particular outfit on display. The jacket is a kind of tweed in a dark charcoal grey. Very smart, but unusual. If I didn't already have an Argyll jacket then it would be top of my list to get. It works well with the Caithness Tartan as well.

What does anyone think of the new hire range that McAllans are doing? I am kind of quite liking the black kilts and the cravat ties (is that what they are called?) that they are doing - a bit different to the usual 'kilt hire' stuff, which is a bit obvious now.

henry20
21-Sep-06, 12:20
We hired 2 kilts for a wedding in August - thought the selection was relatively poor and when the kilts came home, they looked different - one had quite obvious white lines while the other was more subtle.

I personally do not like the black 'tartan' as I feel the traditional kilt has a more elegant look to it.
