Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and the Taliban all have something in common- all were originally armed and put in place by the US government to act as a buffer against the 'bad guys' of the day- fundamentalist Iran, in the case of the iraq leader, or the Russians in the case of the Muja Hadin (seen The Living Daylights anyone?)
However, times change and the weapons the US hands out can be turned against them. Sometimes it just doesn't suit them to have a puppet turn on the former masters.
Bin Laden didn't always have a beard- he came from a middle eastern background that did business with the West- but perhaps the question we should ask is- what was the trigger for people like Bin Laden- or indeed Saddam, to bite the hand that fed them?
Bin Laden's body was 'buried at sea'- but under Islamic tradition a body has to be buried within 24 hours- remember Dodi al Fayed? and making him a martyr was perhaps a mistake- a trial might have been a better option
