KSD Martial Arts Seminar and Black Belt Grading

Caithness was alive and kicking in martial arts recently at the KSD Martial Arts Bushi Seminar 2011 at the Weigh Inn, Thurso.

More than 50 people attended the seminar, some from Caithness and Inverness-shire and others from as far afield as Poland and America.

The session included close-quarter combat, joint-locking techniques, striking and kicking. Also covered were evasive techniques, pressure point techniques, joint dislocations, manriki or ninja weapon, as well as “extreme kata one” for the children.

KSD Martial Arts is run by local man Vince Tait, who was promoted to fourth degree Renshi, or apprentice master, at the seminar.
Mr Tait said: “I think the seminar was very useful for those who attended and I am very grateful for the teaching from visiting instructors. We all benefit from working together at the seminar and it gives us important insights on how to improve.
“The idea of holding the seminar here is so that people can gain expert advice in Caithness rather than having to travel hundreds of miles away.
“It means that money is being ploughed back into the county in accommodation and services for our visitors. We also wanted to highlight Caithness to visiting instructors and are already looking forward to seeing them here again.”
Mr Tait explained that Kong Soo Do is a non-competitive self-defence martial art and fitness programme. He continued: “Kong Soo Do is good for overall fitness and confidence, it’s is good for your health and provides aerobic and cardio-vascular exercise.”

At the event, there was also a grading when eight KSD Martial Arts members achieved a black belt, and one a second degree. The first-degree black belts were adults Douglas Gunn, James Gunn, James Sutherland, Hamish Gunn, Carol Gunn and children Jordan Miller, Kenny Don and Stephen MacDonald. Lewis Appleton gained the second-degree black belt.
