Just got our 1 st car a few weeks ago, hurrah!! It's a Chevrolet Venture mini van and I love it. Don't know the techy stuff about cars, just love the freedom it's given us to go places. :)

Was that you, Betsy, CCR and the open road at a steady 60mph?!

We had "Bruce" (said in a broad Australian accent). He was a LandRover 2a with fake cow-hide on the dash, an 8-ball for a gear-knob, painted like a cow inside, with Dulux blue on the outside, and he was on his fourth engine by the time he was ours. And boy, what an engine. 2.5 Tdi which pulled away from theose southern roundabouts like stink and topped out at about 75 on the motorway for a maximum of 3 minutes before (very dangerously) the track-rod end would unattach itself.

Sigh.

I really miss him. He made me grin like a madwoman.

Made me feel like a mad woman when that track-rod end came off and we veered into the path of a juggernaut, before coming to a halt by a ditch; And there was the time when the gear-stick came off in my hand in second, which did wonders for my arm-muscles, but interfered rather with the passenger...; And the time the door fell off, and was stuck on with a bungee for a couple of months...

my 1st car was a mark 1 escort and on the way home after buying it the throttle stuck on and and i couldnt get it back up again, it scared the living daylights out o me , my pal who was with me had to try to pull the throttle pedal back up which they eventually did, i ended up driving the rest of the way home at 20mile's an hour.
i ended up calling it daisy cos days it went and days it wouldnt but i loved that car;)

i used to have a car with a gearstick that was so loose it was like stirring porridge, and driving along at 60 mile an hour one night realised i was only in 4th gear went to go into 5th and hit reverse the car nose dived forward and there was a seriouslty loud bang and i came came to an abrupt halt, it was before it was law to wear a seat belt and my mate nearly went throught the windscreen.
amazingly i managed to drive off again much to our disbelief :o

Sorry Mrs BillyBoy (?), I was kind of taking the mick after Porshiepoo got slated on another thread for doing 80!

Isn't it funny though, how some of us assign human characteristics to lumps of metal and mechanics? Funny too, how most people's cars are female. Our first car was (however) "Clive". He was a red Maestro that we accidentally bought at an auction. His favourite food was wheel-bearings. Bits came off him at the rate of knots, too, specifically door-handles, radiators, wipers...

Best car I ever had was a 1965 VW beetle. Was easy to do maintenance myself, and rarely had a problem. Had it for 10 years, from 71 to 81, even drove it to Canada and back. It didnt go fast but it went far.
One time I was driving thru the mountains on a very hot day, the windscreen wash fluid line popped off, and bubbles poured out the radio onto my lap. Had kind of a Lawrence Welk moment LOL Gosh, I miss that car.

The car I currently have is the Citroen Xsara, what a beauty - starts first time without fail, modern, comfy - yet fairly cheap to run (45MPG) at fast speeds. Pretty good for 'cruisin' arounf Kirkwall. Bit better than my Pug 205, i decided to get rid when the brakes failed and I had been driving with collapsed suspension for a few weeks lol

iv had 2 cars i would say was the best car ever ... that was a ford granada 2.0 glx . she was hard on fuel but the comfort i had with her was good . i had her for 3 years and she never missed a beat i was up and down the contry loads of times .
the second 1 was a ford mondeo 1.8 zetec 1999 v reg she was the bees knees when i bought her new from inverness . i got her services every 10.000 miles and she drove like a dream till a tree ditch and post jumped on the road and killed her . ( snow and ice on the road ) thats my best cars but the granada still comes in the best in my eyes .

Like Sam, mine was a Mk.1 Escort. Fantastically precise gearbox which I haven't seen beaten by anything since then. First car I removed an engine from (and actually worked when I put it back!!). Got us to Cornwall and back, then when she failed the MoT I gave her a good send-off by taking her banger racing. She took a few with her before she died............

On my 4th generation Vauxhall now (Cavalier 1.6, Astra 1.7 TDi, Zafira 2.0TDi, Meriva 1.7TDi) and can honestly say there's not been a bad one amonst them. The first two were 2nd hand but both got to the point where they were costing more and more to keep on the road, so moved onto new cars which are much more reliable. Even managed to persuade Mrs. Bob to go for a new Meriva (1.4 but wishes she'd now gone for a 1.6) at the same time.

However out of the 4 I liked the Zafira most - I just couldn't justify the extra cost of a new one and didn't need the extra space when it came time to change.

Had to be my gold 1.6 ghia Ford Capri. Absolutely loved that car. Did'nt matter I was half way onto the road just so I could see passed the bonnet for the oncoming cars. It was G R E A T>>>>>> just didn't like cleaning the vinyl roof and it was a pain to park!

I loved my XR2. Managed to drive it from Inverness to Edinburgh once with no oil or water in it (well how was I supposed to know what the funny noise was). Mechanic could not believe I had made it and the car still went after that. Exhaust broke and was hanging off in the middle of edinburgh but managed to make it home sounding like a tractor. The poor thing also managed to drive me all the way to alton towers and back as long as I kept it filled with petrol. If it got too low the car started bounding like a kangaroo, very amusing going up berriedale! Also made it down berriedale once with the brakes "banging". How I ever got anywhere in one piece I will never know but I loved that car

Have had a few new cars since but none of them were up to a car I had in the early eighties - a Vauxhall Ventora, 2.8 ltrs, automatic, power steering, electric seats, leather interior and off course the regulation (for the eighties) vinyl roof.

Couldn't afford the mortgage for a fill of fuel nowadays.

I have had a few cars now and it is difficult to pick the outright best one. the worst was easy it was a 1.8 16v FORD mondeo. Pig slow crap handling and thirsty as a dehydrated trout.
My best ones were in order of ownership
Vauxhaul Nova I put about 50k miles on it in the 18 months i had it all it got was one oil change a new handbreak cable and wheel bearing and tyres. It also got driven everywhere flat out! First car and it was ace.
Vauxhall Cavalier LXi souped up and a thumping stereo that cost more than the car :D A chick magnet LOL (these things are important when you are a young loon)
Citreon AX went everywhere cheaply I could of sworn it had 4 wheel drive what traction it had.
VW Scirrocco old and knackered but fast and great handling always brought a smile to my face.
Jeep Cherokee an amazing machine just too expensive to keep. When my lottery win come in I think I would get another. I could afford more 3 grand repair bills if I was minted.

Plenty more mediocre cars interspaced amongst that lot but those are the ones that stand out to me. Now a car is a way of getting from a to b as cheaply and reliably as possible. Too many speed cameras and the price of fuel takes the enjoyment out of driving these days.

My first car was a white Renault Clio 1.4 RT - the best car ever! It was called Angus Clio-man by the boys and it kinda stuck! It was so much fun owning your own car and having the freedom to go where I wanted. It survived until my brother passed his driving test and is now no more.....

Mine would have to be the old fiesta I bought on ebay for £285 + £150 delivery.

Why was it the best? It was the only car I didn't have to pay up in installments. I was running 2 cars at the time: G reg fiesta & M reg Corolla, but couldn't afford MOT's on both - sold the fiesta for £100, broke my heart, then it sailed through MOT and long outlived my corolla. :(

Have had many cars of various makes and capability, but my favourite was an old turbo diesel Montego which I bought at 6months old and kept for 12 years.(had to keep it, nobody wanted it when I went for a trade in, luckily we were running two cars at the time.) It was really comfortable, and could go like the clappers. I remember reading an article in some motoring magazine, that they still hadn't got a diesel car to do more than 100mph, I remarked that I had had the Montego at 110, when my son who was at that time 19yrs old piped up "it'll go a lot faster than that dad!". Pity they did not make the bodywork to last, it eventually got too expensive in body repairs to keep on the road. The engine was great (a Perkins diesel), all I had to do was change the oil, it had eventually 250,000 miles on it when it put to the cars resting place. I still run diesels, but none quite as good as that engine.

Once had a bright orange Allegro estate with just the old 4 gears. Great car!

But my favourite had to be my Disco. Hubby chopped it in for a Nisan patrol cos the clutch needed doing :confused and I hated the patrol. Lovely touring vehicle, brilliant to get into 4 wheel drive but nowhere near as safe feeling as the disco.
Now have a blinkin rover that is the most awful colour cos hubby decided - again - that we wouldn't need the 4x4 up here. :confused

My favourite car has to be the one i've got now - Golf estate, 1.9 turbo diesel. I know when to top it up with oil when it starts sounding more tractorish than usual!! It had 100,000 miles on it when we bought it 3 years ago, and now has 160,000 and is the most robust & reliable vehicle i've ever driven. It curently needs new tyres, has a scary rumbling noise and worn breaks but it still got to Wick & back (1400 miles round trip) twice in the past 6 weeks with no troubles.

Also had a Landrover 110 once, which was quite fun, once the windscreen had de-misted (if you have a landrover you'll know what I mean  ). People get out my way nice & quick in that!!

An old Rover 216 - the square boxy shape which cost very little and ran for ever. We had so little money in those days and it came to need a new battery cos the old one wouldnt hold a chrge overnight and we couldnt afford one - babies and my ex husband was out of work at he time. He happened to have an old truck battery kicking about - dont ask!!!! We set it in the passenger foot well and i used to jump start it off that in the morning, drive to work and park it up. then jump start it at night when i went to drive home. Managed like that for about 3 months til he got a new job and we could afford a battery. Rusty as anything tho and when we scrapped it a mate drove it away and he couldnt beleive we hadbeen driving it - you had to lift the door to close it and the CV joint was banging and what a wreck it was.

The other was a Montego 2.0i - went like stink and a really really good workhorse car - it brought us up to Caithness when we moved up and it did about 10 trips back south - 1000 miles a turn before we got rid of it but it was comfortable and spacious enough for three car seats for the kids.

I also had a Kia pride - what a miss named car that was. We called it daffy cos it was covered in Duck tape! Having said that it managed to get me to manchester and back and edinburgh and back and it picked its toes up well enough.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the joys of disposable motoring!!!!

Had new cars since then but none of them had the character of those

1986 Pontiac Firebird. 2.8 L V6, 5-speed manual. Went like a bat out of wherever, cornered like it was on rails, and looked great too. Imagine the Knight Rider car, minus the Hoff, white, and with a big phoenix rising logo on the front.

Top speed was higher than the speedometer would register (it stopped at 90 and had the then nationwide speed limit of 55 in big red numerals), but I can say it was in the region of 135 (it's hard to work a stopwatch through a measured mile while driving that fast!). Surprisingly it would do 40mpg on the open road (5th gear was very high).

Sold it in 1989 and have regretted it ever since through a succession of inferior vehicles. Still have a Polaroid of it in my desk. I shall now sit and stare at it for a few minutes, sigh, and put it back.

We had a gorgeous F150 Ute, a real Yankie type pick up. It was in the days when we had horses and used to pull a float.
I loved driving the "effie", she was just beautiful. She roared and with a big V8 351 in her she went fast and sounded great. But, alas, it started costing more for fuel and repairs than paying off a brand new ute, so we traded her in. :~(
This was more than likely a good thing, as I suffered quite badly from road rage whilst driving the "effie", it was so big and with a big steel bull bar, mean looking, so that if anyone cut me off or blocked me in, I would use my size and power to give em a run for thier money. Particular fun when competing for road space with duff duff cars driven by 17 - 19 year old boys with an exhaust system that cost more than the car, and a sound system that cost more than it takes to feed a third world country.
Oh how I miss the "Effie".

Had to be a 1929 Model A Ford. Maintenance and repair was easy. Used to hear that it could be repaired with bailing wire. It did come close to that in its simplicity. It was great on fuel mileage but not so good on acceleration and speed. Too bad that it finally wore out. It was a good one.

Mr Charaltans used to have a Seat Leon 1.8 injection and i loved that car. We used to call it 'The Beast' as it went like ehhhhhhh a 1.8 injection. I had a 1litre Yaris at the time, which was a lovely little car - crashes very well too. I hit black ice at the Ulbster Schoolhouse and ended upside down in the ditch not a scratch on me (my hamster at the time wasn't much chuffed being catapulted to the roof - and was okay i hasten to add) but i loved the Beast.

:( He sold it for a blooming white Kangoo Van as the requirement to go fast outweighed the requirement to cart about his boat/diving gear/man stuff

oh the memories:)

I have had 37 cars in 18 years of driving, just get fed up quickly, boy would I be loaded if I had stuck to the bus/taxi/on foot options, anyway out of them all my yellow Mini Sprite 1300 was the best by far, A reg 1984, bucket seats, minilite alloys and hella rallye 1000's on the front, great fun on the single track roads of Sutherland, the Fiesta Supersport came close though loved it too.

I only passed my driving test this year and my first car was a clapped out Fiesta 1.8D. About 15 years old and a right old heap. How it passed an MOT I'll never know! Anyway had it about 10 days, hated every minute of it and then the friend I bought it from bought it back. I think he felt sorry for me! Next car is a K reg Peugeot 309 which is off the road, needing a few bits which I can't find and then an MOT!

The car I would like is a mint condition Mark2 Cavalier. I kid you not. Can you tell what decade I spent my teens? :)

A G reg MkII Gold Driver - 4 gears, 5 doors. Fantastic little car. Had done about 130k by the time I got rid of it (big mistake) and is still going I believe. The only thing I did to it (other than wear and tear) was a reconditioned gearbox.

Bought myself a 1999 Volvo S80 T6 after that and it must have cost me about 5k in repairs in the two years I had it. Great car, but terribly expensive. It was kindly handed back to the finance company just a few weeks ago. Time for somebody else to foot the bills!

Wife has a Y Reg Toyota Yaris and it's done 115k (all the trips from Glasgow/Dunfermline to Wick) and has had nothing done to it other than wear and tear. Nothing. Great little runner - just get's on with it!

My favourite car has to be my bright yellow VW Scirocco best handling car I have owned bought it as a damaged repairable did it up and roared round rural aberdeenshire for 2 years till I broke it.
Worst car with out a doubt was a 1983 VW Passat it drank gas didn't handle and I hated it got rid of it after a bird built a nest in the airbox.
Got an Audi A3 1.9TDI now its pretty good very economical and quite good handling but due to an expanding family it will be up for sale soon.
