I am looking for a place to go, for the odd day out.

It has to be remote, it has to have no people, no livestock, and have access to a river, loch or beach.

Any suggestions?

What about Sleatle? Very remote, beach , and well worth a visit. No river but beside the sea.

Commore - I will share a dream with you which I propose to make real this year if possible. I want to get on my pushbike and follow the road to its end at Lochmore Coll past Strathmore Lodge. That looks remote enough, has the far reaches of the River Thurso and I cannot think that the track past the end of the road is over-populated with sheep.

I have looked at it on Google Earth and i itch to cycle it faster than the midges can catch me.

It looks the sort of place you speak of.

Strathy East beach is nice!!

Thank you, but although it is indeed lovely, it is too close to houses.

Hi Linda,
Just to reassure,
our dogs don't bother with livestock, and we do understand the opinion of the crofter where there is livestock concerns,
however, we would not as a matter of principle, even consider crossing any land, anywhere, without the permission of the owner / crofter / farmer, which really the reason for my post.
We are crofters ourselves, with livestock of our own and we do share the same worries you do,, and more especially when there are tourists around, who bring their dogs .

Strathy Beach is fantastic for a day out. The river Strathy runs into the sea and it is so peaceful down there - my idea of heaven!

Trouble is, now all us dog owners looking for places they can run in safety (in our case, the safety in question is mainly that of the unsuspecting MOP who might be run over by Baz in his pursuit of seabirds) will end up in these places- not that I mind a bit of dog socialisation!

Peedie Sands or Loch Bushta are both wonderful and remote places but do involve a good amount of walking to reach them.

I agree this is a fantastic place but is now so well publicised as a remote wild place that it is now heaving with tourists!!!

No. I was not saying dont go, please do as it is lovely and peaceful and just give sheep a whistle and they will clear off as it is still unfenced.
Cheers

Fantastic place!

I would agree with that, but you're unlikely to find it empty nowadays.

The last time I went the John Muir Trust actually had somebody walking the route trying to recruit support/donations.

Still a good walk/day out though.

I once fished on the rocks at the entrance to Forss river. That was remote - had to walk there from a farm I parked at. You get a river, the sea, no livestock and (mostly) no people. I was there all day and only saw some old boys netting salmon.

Sadly I'm not and "The Real Ducati" is also an anagram of "a cruel tithead" :D(I wonder if the moderators will leave this post in?)

How about Skerray harbour. There is a path that runs east from the harbour. Was there last week and only saw a couple o people. Some sheep around harbour but did not see any along coast path.

If you're heading for Loch More, may I suggest a small detour up the burn to Dirlot Castle? Wonderful quiet place, the rock the castle was based around makes an excellent picnic spot and it's not far from the Loch More road.

Skerray is lovely too, but again theire are houses and therefore, people close by.
Not remote enough, methinks,

I think Ducati was answering in a state of resigned terror- he would love it if I was a figment of his imagination (but what twisted mind could conceive of ME!)
