Help the police to help you

POLICE have acknowledged the assistance they receive from people in Wick, in the fight against two of the main problems, drugs and vandalism but the importance of keeping up the good work was stressed at the AGM of the royal burgh’s community council.
Replying to a question from the council’s chair, Coreen Campbell, police sergeant James McConnachie said that there was a lot of community spirit in the town and people were prepared to help them. He stressed that their continuing help was important in making inroads into crimes.
The officer said that a lot of good work had been done on the drugs front, recently although the operations were time consuming. Unfortunately, the incidence of vandalism was relatively high.
Councillor Graeme Smith who also sits on Highland Council and is a police board member, said it was up to the community to help the force in any way they could.
He added:” It is not a-them-and-us situation. The police are there to help us but there is not much point in leaving everything up to them. They are as much a part of our life as any organisation in the community.”
Coreen Campbell was re-elected chairwoman, and Ruth Black was appointed to thevice-chair post. Geraldine Durrand takes over as treasurer and Gail Ross remains as secretary.
