Asbestos improvement order lifted

AN improvement notice, served on Highland Council requesting it to tighten up checks on asbestos in its schools, is to be lifted.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told the local authority that it had complied with the advice set out in the notice issued in May 2009.
Surveys for asbestos have now been completed for 714 buildings at 194 schools.
Head teachers have also been given asbestos awareness training.
The actions, which were among the measures recommended by HSE, are explained in a paper to the council's resources committee (http://www.highland.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/53CB80CE-5D41-4F53-993C-D735E804DD8A/0/Item15RES3711.pdf).
Checks have still to be done at schools on the islands of Eigg, Canna, Muck and Rum after bad weather prevented officers from making the visits.
Asbestos has also been removed from buildings at Lochaber High School as part of refurbishment and extension works.
