Detention for two times disqualified driver

A NORTH Sutherland man was sentenced to six months detention after he admitted his second conviction for driving while disqualified, at Wick Sheriff Court, on Monday.
Joiner Ryan Murray, of Strathdon, Baligill, near Strathy, was stopped by police on the A836, Reay to Forss road, early on January 2.
Solicitor Craig Wood said that Murray had been at a party in his girlfriend’s house in Thurso. Trouble broke out and, fearing that he might be assaulted, the accused got the loan of a friend’s car and drove away. He had only travelled five or six miles when he was stopped by officers.
Mr Wood, referring to the 20-year-old’s previous conviction, in 2008, said: “He knows he is in extremely hot water.”
Murray, also pleaded guilty to having no insurance, and was banned from driving for four years. Sheriff Andrew Berry, who saw background reports, told him: “You knew precisely what you were doing.”

Coach crash trial delayed

THERE's been a further delay in the trial of a coach operator involved in an accident at Berriedale while he was taking 30 young Orkney athletes south.
The trial of Timothy Dearman has now been put out to April 26, following a joint motion by the prosecution and the defence, at Wick Sheriff Court, today( Monday) to allow an investigation into a brake fluid sample, among other matters, to be concluded.
Dearman, trading as Tim Dearman Coaches, is accused of failing to ensure that the braking system of the coach was properly maintained.
The southbound coach left the road, crashing into the barrier on the north hairpin bend at Berriedale, on May 7, last year. All the passengers escaped serious injury. Dearman, 66, of Inchavie, Lower Newbridge, Alness, sustained a suspected fracture pelvis and broken ribs.
