Its low because its just rising. Same as the sun is low when its just rising :roll:

A better question would be "Why is the moon so striking tonight?" It's one of those rare (but not once-in-a-lifetime rare) occasions when the moon is full at the same time (within an hour) as it is at its closest to Earth. The last time it did that was in 2008, when the Astronomy Picture of the Day people published this picture:

Why didnt the astronauts travel there when it was like that, it would have saved a fortune on fuel.
