THE vacant Wick seat on Highland Council is being hotly contested, with no less than seven candidates bidding for the winning vote when the deadline for nominations was up at 4pm today.
The by-election was not expected to generate such interest, particularly as it’s a testing time for a people’s representative given the swingeing, and unpopular cuts facing Highland Council.
Four of the candidates are standing under major party flags, a further two as independents leaving, Laurel Bush the only candidate with no political label. Three of the seven are out-of-town hopefuls with one, resident over the Ord in Dornoch.
One of the contestants is making a Highland Council comeback, namely is Jim Oag. Whether he can again win the confidence of the electorate, will be revealed on polling day, April 7.
