THE first step has been taken in an ambition plan to boost the attraction of John O’ Groats as a major tourist attraction.
The first phase in a multi-million pound development, got the green light with the initial £1.8 million of grant aid, being released by Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The developer is Manchester-based Natural Retreats and will involve 16 self-catering apartments at the derelict John O’ Groats Hotel.
Also planned is 23 detached holiday lodges on adjoining land. Work will start in the autumn.
The company also intends to revamp the Last House museum and shop and expanding and upgrading the Journey’s End cafe, as well as progressing a number of arts projects.
Natural Retreats director, Ewan Kearney, said: “We are delighted HIE has shown their commitment to the project by making this substantial investment.”
Carol Gunn, head of transformational projects at HIE, said the investment demonstrated the ambition for John O’ Groats. Their vision was to deliver a vibrant social and business community with a design to reflect the natural beauty of the location and which will release economic potential for the whole area.”
