Tesco slammed over 'sexist' T-shirt
(UKPA) – 3 hours ago
Supermarket giant Tesco is under fire for selling a T-shirt with a logo which critics said "promoted voyeurism".
Women's groups said the shirt - which showed silhouettes of women in the sights of binoculars beneath the slogan "Bird Watching" - was "objectionable" and Tesco's decision to sell it "deeply concerning".
Tesco said the £6 own-brand shirt, which was on sale in shops and on the internet, was a "humorous item" which was no longer available.
"This T-shirt is objectionable on so many levels," said Anna van Heeswijk, campaigns manager for lobby organisation Object.
"It promotes voyeurism, dehumanises females into sex objects and uses sexist language to refer to women as 'birds'. These messages about women are worrying."
Object said it had previously criticised Tesco for selling and displaying "degrading and pornographic lads' mags".
Somali Cerise, prevention manager for the End Violence Against Women coalition, added: "It is deeply concerning that a major high-street retailer such as Tesco sells products that perpetuate the sexualisation of women.
"Our research shows that sexual harassment of young women is commonplace. Products like these T-shirts create a culture of acceptance and normalisation of sexual harassment.
"We are calling on Tesco to take a more responsible and ethical stance to what it sells, rather than send out messages that it is acceptable for men to leer at and ogle women."
Tesco, which also offers a "Sid the Sexist" T-shirt on the internet, said no offence had been intended. It said: "The T-shirt, which was intended as a humorous item of casual wear, was on clearance and is no longer on sale."

Yes breakfast time...9-30am and minus 19 C this morn, and by the way...NO Wind!
The Big Guy was on another Thread about God and all that 'stuff'. An ORG discussion, which really is an arguement, you know what I mean!

And B..........Some time ago I heard a story of two men taking their 90 year old father there for his birthday lunch treat. Thought he was going to have a heart attack before they got him out of there.
Actually they are very nice casual restaurants with 'adornments'!

I think some people need to pull their heads out of their own arses and focus on the real issues surrounding womens rights........

They probably chose it at a treat for themselves and just used the old boy as an excuse to go there!

Could just be a marketing ploy by Tesco.. Throw a baloon up/ Tesco name out in the Public again.
Companies do this solely to make people think....

I once saw a T-shirt on a rather well endowed lass that had "Twin Life Support Systems" across the front. I thought that was brilliant! It was humour, fact, and (I thought) in good taste. I expect that Ms Tiny-mind van Heeswijk would blow a gasket over that one!

A search for Anna van Heeswijk shows that this lady is very busy with her time. Maybe she should spend it trying to achieve a sense of humour.

"It promotes voyeurism, dehumanises females into sex objects and uses sexist language to refer to women as 'birds'. These messages about women are worrying."

Who funds these groups?

Who do they represent?

And why do the media insist on giving them attention?

Total non-story as far as I'm concerned.

Gov't usually funds them.
They represent a small number of 'hard core' (no pun intended) feminists.
The Media.....It presents some sensationalism and cotroversy.
And 'Non Story' is very well put.....
Better we talk about this that 'God'. What u say?

If that is the case then I know where I'd prefer savings to be made other than schooling.

How unbelievaby pathetic, womens rights group? I am a woman and I say get shot of them.
Do you ever notice though any group with the word rights in it's name is often full of rubbish and stupid ideas.
