Can folk remember the best meal they've ever had, when it was, where, and maybe what the occasion was?

I think it has to be Christmas dinner a few years back, I had a 24oz steak with chips and onion rings, Washed down with a bottle of home made wine. I had to go for a lay down after and then slept for 18 hours  Now we have kids and I am a shift worker that kind of overfeeding and drinking is not possible. As I usually have to go to work on christmas day most years :~(

Restaurant called COAST in Oban - it was our wedding anniversary last year and the food was amazing. Al a Carte, problem was the meals were so tiny that they did not soak up the large glass of red wine I had. Ended up stotting to the toilet feeling very embarassed. :(

The Rockpool in Inverness, went for my birthday meal. the owner made us feel very welcome, he made an effort to speak to every diner. The food was mouthwatering, Scallops for starters, fillet steak for main, then came the dessert decision, I couldnt decide between 3 so we had them all and shared them.

I decided I wanted a Singapore Sling, as they had never made one before they gave it to me for free as a tester, lovely:D

Christmas Dinner last year

The Christmas before the boys had spent with their dad and i had sulked the whole Christmas. To be honest it took ame about three months to feel better - i was REALLY down about the whole thing. So last year i was determined to push the boat out.

As it turned out the three boys were with me, The Bruce spent his first Christmas with us and his parents came and then in the evening My best friend and her boy joined us.

The Dinner was absolutely fabulous - everything went really well - it was the best meal i ever ever cooked and the day was amazing. That Xmas dinner will go down as the best meal ever. Roll on this year

As a chef in my past life, I love to cook for others and have people over. But, I really enjoy my food when I go out, and then I love chinese, indian, malaysian or any other ethnic thing. The best ever meal I have ever had was in Melbourne about 7 years ago. It was at a chinese restaurant next to the casino. It was really classy and expensive. We couldn't believe chinese could be so dear. But the service was extraordinary, if you picked up your packet of cigerettes, there was a waiter there to light it before you got one out of the packet, (when we used to smoke, this impressed me) it seemed as if the anticipated your every move, even emptying ashtrays after each smoke. The food was delish, but it was the service that won my heart I think.

There is a restaurant in Orkney called the Creel, I went there a good lot of years ago with my best mate and hubby who were living there at the time, it was AMAZING, the biggest plate of mussels for starter you've ever seen. The food was devine. For those of you, like myself, who are really into seafood, and who have not had the pleasure yet of trying the Captains Galley at Scrabster, I can strongly recommend it!! The food is all locally produce (I think) and cooked to absolute perfection! I have never come out of a restaurant before being able to remember the taste of every single course, it was AMAZING! and I am going again next week to celebrate my 17th wedding anniversary, so roll on Friday!! Apart from eating out, I consider my lasagne to be pretty damn good, infact, I've never tasted better!

Some of the best food I've ever had was while in Boston, Massachusetts. In the North End they have some absolutely fabulous Italian restaurants which I specifically remember a meal of pumpkin raviolis.. witha cream sauce.. was good! & your choice of fresh seafood and ethnic food of every kind in fanieul hall. But, next on the list is Slovenija by far and away.. some of the most wholesome food out. They all mostly grow alot of their own veg so, that makes a difference. I never tried the Slovenian delicacy, cow brain but, makes me wonder considering how good the rest of the food is there. Mexico tis good too! Sorry only thing I think is spectacular in this country is fish, mushrooms and berries.:)

The best meal I've had was in the Newby Bridge Hotel, Newby Bridge in the Lake District. A lovely carvery and desserts! Pity that I have cut my meat eating down to virtually none now.

I'm not sure I can say which was the best meal I've ever had, but I once had a fabulous one at The Witchery (http://www.thewitchery.com/home.html) in Edinburgh. Some friends got married in secret, Mrs S and I were the witnesses, and the four of us went for lunch at the Witchery afterwards. I have no idea how much it cost other than it was a lot, and I wasn't paying. :D

I still haven't been to Martin Wishart (http://www.martin-wishart.co.uk/entrance.html)in Leith. I'm told it's the best restaurant in town by my culinary-expert friend. Have any of our resident Leithers ever ventured in there?

Other great meals were in some of the most "expensive" restaurants in Budapest way back in '83 & '86. This was in communist times and everything was dirt cheap. We spent at least an hour on the first evening in '83 trying to find a place where the main course cost more than a dollar! I kid you not...

I agree with sjwahwah's comments on Italian restaurants in the north of Boston, and the food in Mexico in general. There's a lot more to Mexican cuisine than fajitas, tortillas, burritos, nachos, etc. I must have missed the best of Slovenian cuisine, but this was back in the Tito era when it was still part of Yugoslavia, and we only had one day away from the slightly-tacky touristy coastal areas.

I don't think I ate in a restaurant in Slovenija.. excepting the time in Bled for a piece of cake they are famous for (I now understand why now it's famous!) and a few odds and ends at work... Just had homecookin' while I was there!

Martin Wishart is a bit spendy for my likin' but the Compass in Leith (corner of Queen Charlotte St. and Constitution St.) is very good, excellent in fact and Qupi on the Walk and one of the best Indian resturants.. Asads spin off from the Old Town Kebab Mahal... Bombay Spice on Duke Street. Favourite restaurant in all of Edinburgh has to be Susie's Diner tho, hands down for vegetarian food!

I have to say that it was a set meal at L'Orangerie du Chateau, in Blois, France. We ate at a small table out in the courtyard on a warm summer night, so many courses I can't remember them all, lots of little "chef surprises" in between courses, the service was impeccable, the wine perfect. Can't remember a better meal, plus the company was divine as well.

steak puddin', chips and mushy peas in a tray with gravy. Plastic fork, eaten in the wagon/car/van/leaning against the bike. With a buttered barm/muffin.
Seagulls singing/making that noise that they make in the background an optional extra.

I have to say one of the best meals I can recall was in LA in November last year - a friend had been raving about a steak restaurant that he wanted to take me to. So along with other friends we ended up in Fogo de Chão (http://www.fogodechao.com) in Beverly Hills.

We were warned not to eat all day (try doing that in the US!) and I have to say the expectations were well lived up to. The food was excellent (http://www.fogodechao.com/dining.htm) and the Filet Mignon was out of this world.

The idea is you get issued with a small disc which has a red and green side - if you want meat you leave the green side facing up, if you want a rest or wish to stop you turn the red side up.
One of our party ( a real beanpole) forgot the disc rule and ended up with a pile of meat!

The friend who organised this meal was also kind enough to pick up the tab for the whole party! He is a bit of a gourmand and has tried other Brazilian Steakhouses and he reckons this is the tops.

I would love to make a return visit...

Were you never a boy scout? Flour and water cooked on a hot stone or a griddle or a frying pan.

In Australia it is dough and raisins/currants, baked in large lidded can in a hole in the ground filled with the embers of a fire. You eat it hot with butter or honey.

We just put a dough of flour, salt & water in a camp oven and then put it in the hot embers, some on the top cook for an hour or so. Kind of like a giant scone. Fantastic with heaps of butter. mmmm
