Police concern after underage drinkers sting

POLICE in the far north have expressed concern at the results of a weekend sting operation targeted at under- age drinkers.
It revealed that five premises – three in Wick, two in Thurso- failed out of 18 off-sales establishments visited in Caithness, on Saturday, by plain clothes police using 16-year-old teenagers, posing as customers.
A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said that they were “extremely disappointed” at the worrying results, particularly considering the extensive publicity given to the dangers of underage consumption of alcohol. The spokesman added that in one case, the young ‘customer’ purchasing a bottle of wine, was advised that he could have “two for £10”.
The licence-holders will be reported to the procurator fiscal at Wick and the area licensing board which has the powers to suspend or terminate the certificates.
The spokesman added that the force would be continuing to adopt a robust approach to the problem and the sting operation would be repeated.
