How much RAM does your machine have? Modern software demands so much that RAM is soon used up and the computer has to keep shuttling data backwards and forwards to the hard drive. Do you notice a lot of HD activity? My PC did this so I bought an extra 2 Gb of RAM - rocket powered now!

Try Glary Utilities (http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/glary-utilities/download/) a free safe download which is very easy to use.
Once downloaded and running it offers a single key stroke to tune up your PC and get rid of the usual rubbish which accumulate on PC's

yep good move

run glary

id also change the internet cache setting.
launch the internet

tools/internet options/advanced
drag right down on the slider
tickthe box that says empty internet temp files/browsing

as a test also

under control panel, create a new user

lok in as that user

and do the same things you would normally do that were slow

if its still slow

then i'd run an online virus checker

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm?s_cid=mscom_msrt

hit the protection scan button

then click allow on the popup yellow line that comes up the top
