Why oh why do the big yellow pipes get brought through Wick at 0850??? It holds up school run traffic terribly. Am wondering who to approach about this and suggest that they just wait maybe ten minutes to allow parents to do the school runs, and then the roads are much quieter. [disgust]

Why not plan for potential hold ups on your journey and set off ten minutes earlier?

The world does not revolve around the school run.

But that would mean the Little Darlings getting up 10 minutes earlier Walter, that would never do would it?
The lorries have got a right to be on the road at that time just like everyone else, why should they have to wait till the school run has cleared?...Time is money as they say.
Anyway, kids should walk or cycle to school, much more healthier for them instead of being pampered and spoilt...They will still expect to be chauffered when they are teenagers going off out for the night.
The school run has become a blight on society these days!!

the pipes get here when they get here so tough!.
it can't suit everyone. (there are also other routes to cross the town to the school if necessary)
10mins? what a shame!
no different to roadworks lol
i'd rather they kept coming and kept the rockwater/halliburton/subsea7 (whatever its now called site) busy as it offers lots of local jobs.

not condoning or condemning.. but just in case you don't have school age kids.. i live a 2 min walk from the school.. and we have to get up at 7:30 to make sure everyone is up fed dressed and ready to be at school for 9 am.. on top of that.. i personally have two primary aged children in two dif. schools.. so have to have both of them ready to go in dif. directions. and be able to redirect every thing at the drop of a hat... nothing to do with the "little darlings being spoiled rotine" just a hectic morning rush..
ohh just to add.. the primary kids cant cycle.. i think its p6 that they are allowed to take the cycle training to allow them to cycle to school.. so they do not have that option im afraid.

maybe if the traffic warden made sure it had a clear path though it would speed things up. i must say i have never been held up for more than 5 mins and i meet it most days with the bus taking the kids to school

The towheads come from the harbour, the pipes from georgemas, I'd say a little leeway was quite possible.
To quote from Bambi - "if you can't say anything nice................"
No need to be that harsh at all.

So when someone complains about something, no-one should post anything that differs in opinion from the OP?

This is a forum - not a complaints department - just because you've posted something it doesn't mean that everyone is going to fall over themselves to offer tea and gushing sympathy. Those wagons go through at all times of the day - not just during the 'school run'. Live with it.

My apologies if I'm wrong here Walter, as I obviously don't know you. I've just read over a few of your posts and you don't come over as a very pleasant chap (using the word "chap" due to the name you have on here) to know?

Yes Walter, you're a bad, bad man! How dare you choose to not come across as thoroughly nice and twee.

How very dare you to have a differing opinion, and the cheek to post that opinion - on a thread that has nothing to do with you! Anyone would think it's a public forum or something, with the way that you're carrying on!

Please, will nobody think of the children . . .

Etc., etc., etc.

Why is everyone having a go at Walter? As far as I am concerned he speaks straight and speaks sense. I mean, who in their right mind is going to listen to some school run driver complaining that lorries are holding her up in the mornings for a whole 10 minutes and then to be so cheeky as to say the lorries should wait somewhere else until the school run is over. Why should the school run take preference over a delivery of pipes?, what make the school run so special? Perhaps the school run should have a Police escort complete with sirens and flashing blue lights. The school run holds me and many others up in the morning and in the afternoons but do we complain?
Just because Walter chooses to show how absurd this thread is does not mean he should be pilloried.

OK, OK, guys, lets not fall out about this.. I am big and clever enough to realise that 1) the lorries are important, so are local jobs, 2) I can take another route in the mornings and I shall in future. I also know this IS a public forum as my friend Walter Ego has very wittily pointed out above, so if I have an issue that I wish to aire, either to get advice which I was merely doing this morning, or whatever, I shall continue to use this forum for just that. For the record, my High School child walks to school and back most days (a walk of 25 mins) and if I take my child car there is a very good reason for it, "spoiled" my children are not. Lets remember, that this is a public forum and EVERYONE is entitled to post whatever they like on it (within reason of course!!) :-))

Why not write a letter to the 'Groat' Silverlady (with real name and address) outlining the issue you have with the pipes, or even write a letter to Subsea 7................aye thought not.

No one apart from the 'does anyone know brigade' on here think your complaint is valid. Thats the problems with internet forums, most people i.e. guests, read and dont post as there too busy or sensible to bother, that then leaves the majority of posters who tell us all what they had for dinner, or how clever thier 'OH', kid or cat is.........

Just my opinion......

I hate getting held up as much as anyone, but if the lorries have road tax they're as entitiled to be there as anyone.

I'm a firm believer that the school run has as big affect on childhood obesity than anything else. Even 20 years ago you would hardly see a child driven to school but drive up Janet street when the kids are coming out and there's scores of parents there.

A 30 minute walk twice a day would do them good.

I might need to progress thru Wick @ 9:10 - or perhaps 8.40 - who should I approach about this???

Mibbees the cooncil - wee Sanny Salmond at the parliament to complain?.

Perhaps you may be holding me -(or others) up terribly (UR not) taking your kids to school@ 8:50????

Mibbees the Heilan Cooncil can sort out a curfew on travel thru Wick for your journey if advised in advance. Being a Council Tax Payer be worth investigating. Perhaps road blocks at Tesco's and Homebase between 8.45 - 9;00 so you are not inconvenienced?

Get a life for heavens sake the World don't revolve around your school run,

Using your vehicle at that time is your choice freely given - and I will defend your choice to do so, and of course your right to comment and express your views and opinion, upon such disruption to your day in this forum.

There is no need to be vindictive to express an alternative view I fully agree.

However, constructive comment - criticism - and the expected sarcarsm - (guilty as charged I am afraid) - is part of forum life.

On a wider note.

I would be entertained to know what constitutes a traffic jam in Wick?
From the Wick Brig back to the hospital mibbees - and how often does that happen??

I await your tales of Q;s from Wick back as far as Richard's Garage - or Lybster even.
Do your worst.

That's what I thought - and once you know the path of the pipes - isn't there is more than one route through the town to each school? including 2 bridges over the river?

I really don't see what the problem with the pipe wagons is. They delay the traffic for no more than a few minutes at a time and appear at all hours - not just the school run.

You may as well ask buses not to stop on Bridge Street at the same time delivery wagons are unloading, give traffic flow priority towards the rail station for the 10 minutes prior to any train departure, order the disabled not to park next to shops etc, etc........

If someone is getting a bit stressy about a few minutes delay, they need to examine their own attitude towards other road users first.

I think this is just sizeist. They are not 'wide' loads surely! Long thin loads if they be bits o' pipe.

I'm going to write a strongly worded letter to THEM complaining about the sizeist attitude on the roads today.

Holdups in Wick? Traffic jams? 10 minutes is nothing - hardly worth complaining about. We are very very fortunate to live in Caithness where the traffic is extremely light.

Just have to grin and bear it. Does not happen very often but I know it is a pain when you are trying to get somewhere. Sit back, listen to the radio and do not worry about being a couple of minutes late. The school is not going anywhere and the staff will understand.

just a thought about the school run why not put your kids on a school bus keep your car off the road you get more time and less pollution.

A traffic jam in Wick is when the traffic is queued from the Parish church to the lights at D.E's, two hours to get from one side of Aberdeen to the other is just busy. One of the best things about Caithness, hardly any traffic.

Yep, cant see that big yellow thing walking through the streets. Schoolkids however, I can see doing it, and always did so when I was peedie. Folk that lived outside the 30mph sign bounday in Kirkwall got on the school bus, folk that lived within the 30 mph limit walked or used their push bikes. I was never aware of anyone who got a run in a 4 x 4, or even a normal car for that matter!
