I have private medical insurance with BUPA that I have never used.

I have a dental insurance plan that reimburses the costs everytime I go to the dentist/hygienist.

To be honest I wouldn't have them if I had to pay for them myself, they are provided by my employer, but I think they are worth paying the tax on.

When did boarding school and private medicine become public service?

They are both private and as such need paying for.

If you want a different level of service from the norm you have to pay for it

I think the point being made by Bagpuss is that, even if you pay for your own healthcare, you still have to pay for the NHS through national insurance.

That would be because you are likely to use NHS services.

An ambulance will still come to your aid if you are in an accident, you still get free eye tests etc.

So you are not paying twice for the same service.

Yes, the ambulance is a good example, and that's fair enough.

There is however an argument for less tax for those willing to give up their rights to certain NHS treatments. The north highlands are a good example where, although we are entitled to it, many cannot get NHS dental care and so therefore have to go private.
