so, i wondered what ye do when yer lyin in yer beid at night, an' ye cana get til sleep....

do ye count sheep...or try til mind words til a song....or, think o' countries in 'e far east???

il tell ye fit ah do.

so, i get in ma beid an i remember which letter am on..we'l say A...(but am actually on D ifanow) anyway....

so i get masel comfy, wi' ma two hands free...well, fingers free.....

then i start thinkin o' words...beginin wi' A. an' they hev til be at least 8 letters long (unless its a really guid word, lek....archary - at's a guid word) ;)

an' on ma right hand i put a finger up for ivry word i think o'...an when i get 5 fingers up i put a finger up on ma left hand, an start again on ma right (are ye followin?)

so when i get 5 fingers up on ma left hand, 'at means i got 25 words beginin wi' A, wi' 8 letters or more (unless its a guid word...lek anxious) ;)
then i can move on til B......

unless i feel lek i cheated a bit, an then il make masel count 5 more (choost til be on 'e safe side) but usually i fall asleep aboot then.

so...how do ye get yersel til sleep, withoot readin...cos i do 'at too.

........an can ye gie me some E words cos i usually get stuck on them....? takes me aboot a week, tho ah da participate at 'e weekend........much :D

I've suffered with Insomnia for years now, and even the sleeping pill i take every night, along with the sedative painkillers i take for my knee and back pain won't send me to sleep if i haven't had a few tins of beer. I'm trying to lay off the booze just now, and it's a nightmare to get to sleep, this is the 2nd night that i've gotten out of bed at 3:am to drink a tinnie and take a few extra painkillers to help me on my way. Tonight i was just lying there in the dark staring at the foof coming up with possible lyrics for a couple of new songs i'm writing, and even though i tried to stop thinking of melodies and lyrics, they just popped back into ma heed. The tinnie kicking in nicely now, so...i thinks it's time to head back to bed before it wears off.

Och lassie I know how you feel ! :(

I put a thread on here some time ago about putting famous names to a double letter of the alphabet...

eg. :-

A - Adam Ant
B - Brian Blessed
C - Charlie Chaplin......etc

I'm like you; I always try to better myself by finding more and more names that are applicable......BUT....it seems to keep me awake more than helping me go to sleep LOL !!

I try and see how many names I can think of with each letter of the alphabet. Which can I get more of, boys or girls?
Many years ago when we were kids, my brother and sisters and I tried making up a sentence starting with A for the first word, right through to Z. Difficult, especially trying to make sense! We did it though, and I can still remember it after 50 odd years, even though it was never written down!

Mmmm!! Gizmo, Its not a good idea to mix sleeping pills, painkillers and alcohol....I would have a word with your GP and see what they say about the cocktail you are having. Its very easy to get hooked on this cocktail and I woudnt like to see anybody hooked on that just so that they can sleep. Hope you dont mind me mentioning it but I have seen this so many times in the past, please have a word with your GP.

I agree. It's not good to mix alcohol and pills of any description.

I can't sleep most nights, and stay up as late as i can. I have to lay awkwardly due to not being able to bend my right leg or have my leg laying against anything as it's too painful. I can't lay on my left side as i have had a large piece of the Latissimus dorsi muscle taken to put into my right leg and now can't lay on that side too long either, a lot of nerve damage to both. So as you can imagine i am tossing and turning all night. I have pain relief but try not to take it too often, but when i do it makes me feel normal for a while, and i seem to be able stay up longer. As for what i think of when i am unable to sleep well....My mind runs amok, and i find myself thinking about death a lot. My own and other people who have gone, morbid i know. I just can't stop this train of thought in the early hours whilst tossing and turning, trying to get comfy and get to sleep. I was recently given a specialist drug for pain, i researched it and decided that the contraindications where not what i was prepared to take chances with. So decided not to take them and stay with my original pain relief. So Gizmo, whilst i understand what you go through,:) you really need to be careful with pain relief without the added hazard of alcohol. :(

I used to get insomnia Trix - years ago. No caffeine after 7pm and nothing with sugar in it. Then mint tea about 30 minutes before bedtime. I went to Baldwin's herbalists in London and asked them;

http://www.baldwins.co.uk/

They told me that Mint tea has been used to help sleep for centuries.

I just listen to my breathing.....I fall to sleep within mins every time. It works for kids who SAY that they canna sleep as well......and then they wake in the morning thinking ur magic!! lol
Dont believe in counting sheep, etc as that is engaging my brain and I try not to do that too often!!

when my oh is offshore its a nightmare, i just can't sleep before 3am.
impossible!
i couldnt do any of the things suggested above as the more i think the more awake i get :(
so i surf the net, watch tv, play on the wii fit until i'm fit to drop and then go.
or at a weekend add a few glasses of wine to the mix.
then back up with the kids at 7am.
this lasts the 4 weeks he's away.
oh returns home, and i could sleep on a washing line! lol
it's like my body tells me its ok to sleep now as someone else is here to keep us safe!

weird, so weird.

I try NOT to think about interesting topics or do mental exercises - that wakes me up for sure.

I listen to my breathing and my heartbeat, and I usually drop off.

Except tonight, my tinitus kicked-in, so I'm org-ing a little and will try again later.

I must be one of the lucky ones, I seem to be able to sleep any time, anywhere. But I do not sleep for too long, never go to bed on the same day as I get up, and I get up fairly early. But perhaps years of shift work in my young days got me into the habit of dropping off for a short snooze when it was convenient, anywhere and at any time as long as it was warm and peaceful.

My OH is the same as you. As soon as his head hits the pillow, he's gone. Wish i could do the same, even before my health issues, i still had trouble getting to sleep.

Trix - if your local newsagents is still open, the Guardian today has a 'Good sleep handbook' inside it as a supplement. Lots of good stuff there...worth a read. Saturday 29 Jan.

I toss and turn in my bed until I get exhausted. Then I drop off to sleep. Would rather not take anything to help me to get to sleep. I already take too much medication to treat my diabetes, heart problems, etc.

I also did not realise how many people had trouble sleeping. I simply put my head down, close my eyes, make my breathing slower and empty my thoughts (easy in my case, lol) - bingo! Out for the count. One good trick worth trying is getting a complex text book on something like Astrophysics or Computer Programming - try reading that in bed!

Ricco: Reading those text books might get interesting to me and it would linger my sleep. I would have to find something more boring. Doing that could possible work to get me off to sleep.
