Good quality: Acer, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba

Good price: Advent (PC World own brand).

You won't regret buying quality, ultimately. If you can get a pc with a full XP disk as opposed to the accursed Recovery Disk, that's good and valuable.

If it has to be very portable, check the weight and battery life and make sure it's wi-fi. If not, get the highest screen resolution you can afford, with the most memory; start by looking at screen res, but be prepared to drop a little on screen res to get more memory if needs be. But if you want to manipulate digital images /play recent games you want high res screen re AND lots of memory.

At all costs avoid Celeron laptops. Far too sloooooooooooow. Hope this helps.

We have a couple of HP laptops - very reliable - but can also recommend Acer and Dell (if you don't mind waiting for it to arrive).

I agree with other comments about getting WiFi capable - if you've got (or are planning) Broadband then going for a wireless option makes it superb for being able to move your PC anywhere in the house. It also means if you go into a WiFi enabled hotel, airport, hotspot, etc. you can log on and check mail, surf, etc.

Would agree with many posts that dell gives you good value for money, but I have had very bad experiences with them and their machines. Toshiba and HP are very reliable but overpriced. Acer is good, personally wouldn't pick medion. Am not sure if PCworld still sell averatec, but they are great little things.

All depends on what you want a laptop for, to replace a desktop, to just browse the net and check e-mails, to watch DVDs while you travel, or to just sit in the garden and post on here. If just for net and e-mails would go with acer/dell but for a real beast (like the mALX) to replace a desktop or if you are into video editing and games www.alienware.co.uk (http://www.alienware.co.uk/) have unbeatable systems although they were bought by dell earlier in the year and probably come with their crappy service now. Grrr

Oh you say you wanted internet, if you use broadband then the laptop will have USB or Ethernet as standard. If you are still using dial-up then you will have to specify you want a laptop with a modem or buy one separately

Although its nice to see and touch and play with the machines in most shops, you will save a fortune buying online.

Best combination of quality/price comes from http://www.rockdirect.com/ but if price no object then Falcon Northwest/Sav Row or Voodoo make NICE ones. Cheap makes are good, like Pentium 4 processors, for sorting wobbly tables and chairs. Have owned a Dell but their use of cheap generic parts makes then unreliable and then if it breaksdown they'll say it was your fault and isn't covered by their warranty!

Laptops take a huge amount of abuse compared to a dekbound machine, even if you're careful, and things can shake loose. Heat is also an issue with them.

Dell suffered a lot of bad publicity lately because they had to recall a lot of machines for battery problems. The batteries (made by Sony!) can occasionally overheat and catch fire.

I would say for ease of use and no techy nonsense... go for an Apple iBook or MacBook. You can have it out of the box, connected to the internet and ready to go in under 10 minutes with almost no technical knowledge.

I have used Macs for years in the creative industry and cant recommend them highly enough, just purely for ease of use and reliabilty. I still use my original titanium Mac laptop that is now 6 years old, and runs almost all the latest software. I also recently persuaded my Mum to get an iBook instead of a new PC laptop, and she hasn't looked back since. All the problems that she had using PCs have gone....

See my above post - it's the SONY batteries in some of their models that have been catching fire (just a small number of them at that). Today Apple announced a recall of a lot of their machines with Sony batteries, so it's not confined to Dell.
