PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE

Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being
sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and
you will not be able to fix it!

If you get an email along the lines of "Osama Bin Laden
Captured"

or "Osama Hanged" don't open the attachment.

This e-mail is being distributed through countries around
the globe, but mainly in the US and Israel.

Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND
CONTACTS:

You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached filed called

"Invitation" regardless of who sent it.

It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the
whole hard disc C of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your
e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this
e-mail to all your contacts.

It is better to receive this message 25 times than to
receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a
friend, do not open it and shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been
classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is
no repair yet for this kind of virus.

This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard
Disc, where the vital information is kept

Does no-one ever check these things before posting? If you receive such a warning via email, just type the first few words into Google and you'll find exactly what you're looking for in the vast majority of cases.

Go look here (http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/osama.asp) and here (http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/invitation.asp).

We'd had numbers 1, 2 & 4 of the top 25 urban legends (http://www.snopes.com/info/top25uls.asp) in the last week or three, and I'm sure we had number 9 not too long ago.

The good old Australian plan to deport Muslims (http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/australia.asp) was posted yesterday.

The usual rule on posting such things is DON'T! In fact, don't even think about it. You are doing exactly what the hoaxers want you to do.

That's the problem. You thought you were doing the right thing. The saddos that write the hoaxes abused your good nature, and that's how the things are spread.

Nothing unusual in that eh?

Personally, I never open any e-mail that is unexpected. I always read the preview since one of my brothers is always sending jokes and chain-mails - these I delete out of hand. Anything else from unexpected sources gets the chop right away. Likewise I never forward anything that is not planned. Finally, I keep my AV and AS up to date and check the system at least once a week. Seems to work beautifully.

Ricco, when running Spybot there days I hit a problem, one called Zwax and Spybot cannot get rid of it, I have even tried to ignore it, with no avail, have you heard of any cure?

'Scuse me jumping in, Golach (and Ricco), but if you use several spyware packages on it, one of them may be able to remove it. I've found Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/) to be very good: Microsoft's own AntiSpyware (in beta) is also good and there are several online spyware search services. There's no reason why you can't run several of these things on your machine.

If you run XP or 2000, you could also create a restore point, locate the zwax file and rename it. That way, if you need to, you can go back to where you were. Also make sure you keep the security updates from Microsoft up to date.

Gents, ignore this. I'm talking rubbish (again!) at least as far as zwax is concerned. If you Google zwax, you'll find lots of references. Away to have a read.

Golach, take a look >>>>here<<<< (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2191)

Looks like a bug that'll be fixed if you update the software. Recommend delete Spybot through "uninstall" and start again with a completely clean install and update. Good luck........ sorry about the false start, though the thing about running several spyware finders is OK.

Recommend delete Spybot through "uninstall" and start again with a completely clean install and update.Agreed. I had a major malware invasion in May and Spybot 1.3 was helpless - despite the fact that I'd kept it updated. I uninstalled 1.3, installed a clean version of 1.4, and it picked up a pile of stuff that 1.3 had missed.

I've found Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/) to be very good: Microsoft's own AntiSpyware (in beta) is also good and there are several online spyware search services. There's no reason why you can't run several of these things on your machine.Agreed - again. I installed the newest version of Ewido recently and it picked a whole load of undesirables that Spybot 1.4 had missed. Most were harmless tracking thingies but there was a trojan too.

The Spybot forums (http://forums.spybot.info/) are good - post your serious problems on there and they'll get back to you with a solution within a few days.

I think Microsoft AntiSpyware is now called Microsoft Defender.

The other thing to do (if you haven't already) is to go into Safe Mode and run your antispyware from there. I'll make further enquiries as well. Oh, and as someone else mentioned, you should run at least two, preferably three antispyware packages - but only ONE antivirus, of course. ;)

I think Microsoft AntiSpyware is now called Microsoft Defender.

It is indeed, Dr. Szin. Also, Microsoft can now offer an on-line system check and scrub-out. Found it very useful as it discovered 3 trojans that my AV and AS missed. It will also check the security of your connectivity.
