Fogive me if this is a) in the wrong place or b) already been posted but I thought this cloud formation a little strange. Taken from Wick looking over towards Milton. Picture not brilliant as it's just a snap. Anyone seen something like this before?

hello Sweetie :D

It's a good old fashioned Cumulonimbus cloud with an anvil top called an Incus

The anvil is made up of ice crystals and they can be truly massive. It's that shape because the crystals are being moved by air currents high up.

Underneath you'll likely get hail and perhaps a bit of lightning

yeah...btw it is a LOVELY pic!

This is Cumulonimbus incus with little precipitation or Cumulonimbus with anvil. The anvil is the flat top.

Wow, Sage and Kodiak, thank you for that information! Good to know it's only likely to be hail or lightning coming from it and not little green men.

Thank you for your comments on the photo, folk. :)

Nice photo !

Theyr'e quite common, but because there's no wind just now, the cloud holds it's shape better.

I think your cloud may be "as seen on TV". Sean Batty had a picture of this one taken from the west? on the 18:30 weather forecast on STV. Unfortunately his picture galery is a month out of date.

My husband said he'd seen it on TV tonight too but I missed it. :( Maybe it will turn up online in a while.

Thanks for the link, Dog-eared, I shall have a look round there later. :)
