Lossiemouth 4 v Wick Academy 5 (aet) at Grant Park, Lossiemouth

Report from Highlandleague.net

Lossie lose after an epic encounter 04-Sep-2004
Huntly face the long trip north to Wick to face a victorious Academy side that required extra time to beat Lossiemouth in a game that certainly lived up to it's Game of the Day tag.

Martin MacGregor opened the scoring for Wick in the 25th minute when a long throughball from the right by Gary Manson found it's way through MacGregor who placed it beyond Stevie Dunn from five yards

Lossie levelled the game on the half hour when a Simon Allan free kick from the left was lofted into the box. Shawn Scott rose to head down to his striker partner Darren Shalliker and he coolly slotted the ball low into the bottom right hand corner from 6 yards.

Then a stunning 2 minute spell saw three goals fly in with the game complexion of the game constantly changing. Lossie took the lead after some good individual play by David Hendry who's cross evaded everyone and left Simon Allan to tap in from 10 yards. Lossie struck again in the 37th minute when Lee Moir took the ball past three Wick defenders before lifting it over Don MacMillan from 6 yards.

Wick then pulled one back a minute later when Gavin Henderson picked the ball up 25 yards from goal before unleashing an unstoppable shot which flew into the top left hand corner giving Steve Dunn in the Lossie goal absolutely no chance.

The Scorries were back on level terms on the stroke of halftime when a cross from the left by Gary Manson found Gary Weir who headed back across goal into the far corner.

Ten minutes into the second half and Lossie regained their lead with the seventh goal in this remarkable match. A great through ball by Steve Ellis sent Shawn Scott clear and the ex Forres hitman kept his composure to side foot home past Don MacMillan from 10 yards.

However Wick sent the game into extra time when Gary Weir netted his second of the game with eleven minutes remaining. Neat play out wide by sub Martin Gunn saw him create the space to cross for Weir to score with a spectacular diving header.

Extra time saw the game continue in controversial circumstances. With only two minutes to go in the first period Wick were awarded a penalty to the fury of the Lossie players and fans alike.

Darren Shalliker, Shawn Scott and Stevie Dunn were all booked in the ensuing debate which seemed to upset Alan Sinclair who subsequently missed the spot kick. Almost immediately Shawn Scott was shown a second yellow for talking out of turn to referee Eric Robertson reducing Lossie to ten men.

Wick then sealed the game with the only goal in injury time. A cross from sub Colin Davidson appeared to be too long for Mackenzie but he managed to hook a volley into the back of the net to clinch a second round berth for the Scorries.

Both Caithness teams in The MSIS North Caledonian League did well on Saturday as Halkirk United won 3-0 at home to Bonar Bridge and Thurso hammered Invergordon 6-1 at The Dammies.

At Highland League level, Wick Academy's dreams of a cup run were dashed as they lost 4-2 at Harmsworth Park to Huntly.

Summary of the North Caley League games plus next game info below:-

The top five teams played the bottom five this weekend and all five top teams won convincingly.

At the top of the table Thurso maintained their slender lead at the top with a 6-1 win at home to Invergordon with goals from Alan Murray (2), Mark Nicholl (3) and Luke Cassidy.

Alness United and Halkirk United kept close on Thurso's heels with 7-1 and 3-0 wins respectively at home to Tain St.Duthus and Bonar Bridge.

Balintore also kept in touch with a 4-0 win away in Helmsdale against Bunillidh Thistle.
And finally Golspie Sutherland kept their 100% league record intact with a 3-0 win away at Dornoch.

Next weekend sees The second round of The Port Services Cup with Balintore entertaining Dornoch, Thurso travelling south to face Alness United, Halkirk United take on Bunillidh Thistle at Recreation Park and finally Bonar Bridge entertain Invergordon.

The only league game should be between Golspie Sutherland and Tain St.Duthus as both teams were put out of The Port Services Cup a few weeks ago.

Cup ties kick off at 2.30 and league games at 3 p.m

Well done to Wick Academy last night who progressed to The North of Scotland Cup Semis. see report from Highlandleague.net website below:-

Wick win out in dramatic circumstances 14-Sep-2004

Wick Academy scored in the 96th minute to seal their place in the semi final's of the Caledonia Broadband North of Scotland Cup and once again Gary Weir proved to be the hero extending his goalscoring streak to a goal in each of his last three matches.

There was drama even before the kick off with Wick keeper Don MacMillan, who was set to return from a suspension that ruled him out of the weekend defeat at the hands of Huntly, injured himself in the warm up.

Young keeper Kevin McGee, who had deputised for Don on Saturday was working at the local swimming pool and his name was added to the list of subs but with his arrival not coming until the start of the second half Alec Lamb donned the gloves, and wore them throughout the ninety minutes.

In fairness to Lamb he had little to do but he certainly had to pick the ball out of the net in the 24th minute when Shane Sutherland buried the ball from only six yards out to give the visitors a surprise lead.

Golspie battled on manfully against mounting pressure from the home side and in the 58th minute the tension on the field finally boiled over. Paul McCallum, making his first start since breaking his leg, and Darren Pullen came to blows and were both sent for an early bath by referee Jason Hasson.

Hasson was again a key figure just eight minutes later when he awarded Wick Academy a penalty when the fast feet of Gary Manson lured in Gary Benson who felled the left footer just inside the area.

Martin Gunn strode up and fired the ball straight down the middle and with Iain Young diving it meant the scores were level.

Wick could now smell the semi finals in front of them and they pushed on in the search of what seemed to be an elusive winner. Golspie keeper Iain Young performed heroics however the North Caledonian side finally crumbled in the sixth minute of seven extra minutes added on to the end of regulation time.

Gary Manson's corner was met by Gary Weir, who had hit the post ten minutes earlier, and he headed the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the homesters and the despair of the visitors.

Wick will now keep an eager eye on tomorrow night's match between Forres Mechanics and Elgin City with one of those two sides their likely opponents in the semi final stage.

In The Scotads Highland League Wick Academy lost 3-0 away to Inverurie Locos.

I don't have any news yet of Halkirk United's home fixture against Bunillidh Thistle from yesterday afternoon.

It wasn't such a good day for Caithness Football sides playing in The Scotads Highland League and The MSIS North Caledonian Leagues.

Wick Academy lost 3-1 to Huntly with their goal coming from Paul McCallum. This leaves Wick still pointless along with Brora and Rothes at the foot of the league table.

Thurso took on reigning champions Golspie Sutherland and drew 1-1 at The Dammies, thanks to Mark Nicholl's tenth goal of the season in six games.

Halkirk United missed the chance to join Alness United at the top of the table as their fixture away to Bunilligh Thistle in Helmsdale was called off.

Next week sees both Halkirk United and Thurso compete in The Semi-Finals of The Port Services Cup as Thurso travel to Invergordon and Halkirk travel to Balintore.

In the Scotads Highland Legaue Wick Academy face a tough long trip to Inverness to take on Clach at Grant Street Park.
