Same name as the chiel from Dundee
Who wrote some dreadful poetree.
He could be a rapster now
backed by awful electic row
His records will all go to gold
He'd be a star so wondrous to behold.

Welcome Magonigal

On yoner hill there stands a coo
it must have moved
its no there noo

The Tay the Tay

Far be it for me to argue with such a venerable and venerated geezer such as yourself, Golach, but I think you will find that, although frequently attributed to the pen of McGonnagall, the quoted verse was not written by him at all.:confused

Among the poets of the present day
There is no one on earth who can be possible for to gainsay
But that William McGonagall, poet and tragedian.
Is truely the greatest poet that was ever found above or below the meridian

Here is an interesting wee link for you all: http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/centlib/mcgon.htm
I remember my father having a chuckle about McGonagall's poetry when I was growing up. My father hailed from Dundee so naturally I have to be supportive regarding the so-called world's worst poet, but McGonagall's optimism nearly always shone through so I have to smile about that! :D

Why isn't there a Macgonnigal day or even an annual festival to celebrate his entertaining brand of poetry and factual recording of events of the day?

He must have passed through Caithness on his way down from Orkney and may even have stayed in Wick and who knows how that could have influenced his subsequent career!
