Land Rover on the road to discovery in Caithness

BREATHTAKING scenery was the driving factor in Caithness being chosen for the worldwide launch of a brand new car.

Car manufacturing giants Land Rover this week checked in to the county to showcase their latest model - the Land Rover Discovery 3.

Members of the motoring media from around the globe will converge on Caithness over the next two months to test drive the vehicle.

Over 800 journalists from 134 countries have been invited to be among the first to put the latest model through its tracks.

Tourism bosses have welcomed Land Rover to the Far North and admitted they could not buy the publicity the event is expected to generate.

The Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board pointed out Caithness has much to offer visitors exploring the area by road.

Land Rover moved in to the exclusive Ackergill Tower yesterday.

The internationally-recognised British-based company, which will also utilise the redundant Caithness Glass factory in Wick, says it is proud of its heritage and believes Caithness encapsulates the picture postcard image of Scotland.

In an advert for Highland tourism, the guests will sample the best Caithness has to offer. After flying into Wick Airport to be greeted by a cavalcade of cars lined up on the runway, they will be chauffeur-driven to Ackergill Tower where they will be given a presentation on the Land Rover Discovery 3 and later wined and dined on the finest local foods. Journalists will also be invited to road test the vehicle for themselves on the Far North's rugged highways, including off-roading on the picturesque Ben Dorrery, St Clair beach and Loch Eriboll.

A Land Rover spokesman said:

"The reason we have chosen Caithness for the worldwide launch of the all-new Land Rover Discovery is because this is a beautiful part of Scotland with breathtaking scenery and everything our foreign colleagues would expect to see when they come to this part of the world.

"Another reason we have chosen this part of Scotland is the type of roads there which are second to none for driving conditions.

"This is the car that will replace the Land Rover Discovery - probably the most important car in our range - and it is hugely important that we launch it properly."

The Land Rover Discovery 3 claims to be a technology-packed, premium SUV designed to deliver outstanding performance both on the road and off-road and boasts exceptional space, comfort and flexibility for up to seven adults.

HOST spokeswoman Casia Zajac said: "It is no surprise that Land Rover have chosen Caithness to show off their latest model.

"I've always believed that the natural environment of Caithness and the northern Highlands encapsulates what a visitor imagines the Scottish brand to be.
