I believe there was a thread about this a while ago, and many didn't believe it would happen, but it apparently has now started. So far, over 70 websites have been seized, and they are trying to pass further legislation to give them even more powers.

Story here (http://www.naturalnews.com/030542_censorship_internet.html).

I noticed this when my usual website for watching tv shows online was shut down. Within hours it was back online with the domain .cc rather than .net.

There isn't much the US can do because as long as the sites are hosted out of the US there isn't anything they can do.

I dont see this as human rights being violated in any way as they are taking down illegal sites that violate copyright. About time i say -hypocritical i know. :)

Looking at that thread it will be interesting to see Metalattakk response.

This is what they put on the site they have seized

Wikileaks is hosted in France. Does US law apply in France?

I dare say that the 'mercins will take down any site that is available in the states that they have the means to.

Do you think they would tolerate a radio broadcast into the states that broke their laws?

I see (on Sky) that wikileaks say their server is under cyber attack.

Gosh! I wonder who's doing that? ;)

It's not possible to turn off the Internet, it is possible to effectively isolate parts of it from other parts, it all depends how much money you're willing to speed and how unethical your IT is. China and Iran et al currently do a half-assed job of this. I suppose they want the highest return on investment and are just happy if 90% of the populace doesn't have access to subversive material.

Okay the registrant whois information is not the same as the physical location of the server; it's registered in the US but hosted in France. Think Swiss bank account and applying the owners countries laws to those. It's even possible to host multiple servers in numerous locations cluster them and tie then into a CDN. That being said .com .net .org etc are controlled by US registrars.

I doubt it's Obama either, all indications point to big business and all they've done is a DNS repoint, changing the nameservers. Hence all people need to do is register a domain not controlled by a US based authority or just tell people to use an IP.

Hmmm.......SW1A 2AA!
How about that fer a server location? Could be a giggle as Obama doesn't seem that keen on Dave the rave anyway.

It is rubbish, and it's not happening. Obama is not shutting down the internet.

And you wanna know why? He can't.

Yep, take out a few strategic hubs, data centres, and ISPs, Bob's your uncle.

Not to mention the vast majority is still cabled together.

The mercins have enough resources to pretty much do what they want, given enough motivation.

I've heard the whole thing runs off a 13amp plug in a broom cupboard in the white house.

It'll be some treasure hunter digging fer gold coins in Cornwall that'll switch the tinterweb off when he puts his shovel through the wire.

As I've said they can isolate parts from other parts or temporarily screw with DNS or some other service but they can't take the entire thing down and even if they spent a lot doing some high grade isolation, there are still ways around that.

The Web Sites that are being shut down, now over 80 in number, are those that sell 'fake goods etc'.
Complaints are received by the USA Fed Gov't., and they take action as appropriate.....
Nothing to worry about.......

You're coming at it from an IT perspective, I'm coming at it from an ordinance perspective. [lol]

This still temporally shuts down the whole world's internet, and my pop-up blocker is in operation.. I think as 'the button' shown, is such a powerful tool, maybe it acts spasmodically?

Obama had to go and shut down ANOTHER of my TV show streaming sites![evil]

Obama had my full support until then, this is just crazy.

The logic is, if i cant watch TV illegally online then i have no reason to have the internet, and if nobody had the internet millions of people would be out of work, the government wouldn't be able to spy on me and there would be a very empty 8 hours in the day of people lives.
Some people just don't understand:roll:

I'm certain that France would not allow US law to apply in their country. The last time I was there I felt very unwelcomed.

When my comrades landed in France they were very welcomed. After DeGaul ordered them out of France none of my comrades were welcomed except in Normandy.
