Think this is a General topic, but anyone else finding this 'Google Instant' which has been out since September, annoying and frustrating? I've always had my Google search set for do not suggest and now set it for 'do NOT use Google instant' my cookies are enabled, and yet as soon as I start typing 'suggestions' come up.
Yet beside the result I have 'Instant is off' - so why the hell does this default? Done searches and it's making a lot of people very frustrated.. oh well looks like it's going to be Bing... [evil]

I don't use Google Instant, but what I find a pain the backside, is the Google Images.

For some reason it takes ages to load and seems to slow my pc down.

I hate it...........

As someone said:"it's like having a conversation while someone tries to complete your sentences for you.".. I had a good look around and found; "I've been an IT Specialist for over 20 years... and I hate Google Instant with a passion. I've never used it and I don't want to use it... but there is NO way to turn it off even when the Preferences are set correctly. I'm using Win7 & IE 8. I'm going back to AltaVista until Google gets their act together."

But THEN I found that if you copy and past this: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en (http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en) as your home page in Internet options, seems to have sorted it...;)

Sometimes it's useful but I do find it annoying. All those constant queries can't be good for Googles bandwidth either.

I can imagine it would be quite annoying if you dont like it. I have no idea why they removed the option to turn off suggestions when they introduced instant.

I dislike instant, but I like suggestions so it doesnt bother me. However i can very well imagine a lot of people have the same complaint so they may add the option back in.

In theory it turns itself off for really slow connections, you can also use something like the Firefox/Iceweasel extension NoScript to selectively disable JavaScript and turn it off.

Still unable to hold settings in Google search, tried the one I mentioned earlier, but no option to search UK pages, so now on http://www.bing.com/ and their settings actually work.. fair enough eventually Google may sort out their problems, but its Bing for me..;)

I'v turned it off from Googles home page.

Maybe they've listened to the chorus of complaints that many folks were unable to use preferences or the choice next to the search.. Don't really care, Bing.com suits me fine..

I've just this week got my laptop up and running again, and I've changed to Google Chrome. So far it's the best I've tried, and works faster than the old Google!

Do you still have to download all the applications for it?

When I first got back on line, there was a list of options. I just opted for Google Chrome, and in a few seconds it was up and running. I opted not to have all the add ons. just to have it as my default search engine

Have always used Advanced Search in Google, which doesn't seem to be affected by Google Instant - In fact, had to go to the Basic Search page to see what the fuss was about.

Set Advanced Search as your search engine in Bookmarks and job done!

Also, forgot to mention, its not an issue if using Chrome as your browser, as for a simple search, you simply bung the keywords into the URL bar (where you normally type www......) and hit enter. That gets you right to the results page. There is a "sort of instant" in Chrome in that it gives you matches from your history, so if you type the first few letters of Caithness Forum, it completes the rest for you. But its only what you have looked at before, not anything and everything.
