Heard on the news about those poor ex-servismen/women who were nothing more than guinae-pigs in the Atomic Bomb test having their claims knocked back by the Judges for two reasons....1. out of time! 2. they were 'old' so health problems due to that (possibly). Now correct me if I'm wrong (bated breath) was it not just the other week that we were told 'Millions' were...sorry are being paid out to certain people for UK's complicity in their 'alledged torture'. What an upside down word we have.
Can anyone help me understand this, appart from..that's life!! [disgust]

Agree with you Garnet - I know sevreal of the "lads", not so young but determined. Have not spoken to the Stanard Bearer of this UK group in the past week, he was adamant they would be fighting their corner until all who are still left have gone from this life.
This British Nuclear Veterans group are now talking about laying up their colours as there are so few of them, they live in various parts of the country, with age catching up on them and numbers decreasing it is becoming harder and harder to keep going but they are determined to keep fighting for some compensation.

The USA Nuclear Veterans are likewise having trouble collecting from their Government. I have a Navy Buddy whose ship was parked within a 7 mile distance of the detonation of a nuclear test blast shortly after WW2. He has a growth on his neck that the USA Government is currently trying to evaluate to determine whether he has anything due him. He was awarded three purple hearts for wounds received during WW2. He likewise had a ship blasted from under him and had to be rescued from shark infested waters. I was a little more fortunate. I received 50% disability for my 3-year service contributed in the Pacific during WW2.

I'm sad to hear that 'Old Marine' but even sadder to know that compensation has to be fought for and not given freely as it should have been, I'm sorry to hear from Pat that the Veterans are going to lower their flags, that says it all and upsets me terribly all I can say is a thank-you to all those who gave me my freedom and to you and yours OldMarine, tell your friend too.

I think that the problem here is with our compensation culture.

The fact that "specialist solicitors" can fill our screens with adverts should show us all where we're going wrong.

And unfortunately it's all to the detriment of the needy and deserving.

As far as I know, every other country has compensated their men for being used as guinea pigs on Christmas Island - except the UK.

Absolutely shocking!

No surprise there, then.

I agree but with the legal aid going down the tory pan it could be the last resort in some cases, note these words "only the rich will get justice soon or those with something to lose (the wannabes)".

Yeah, but on the bright side, we've sent all our money abroad to other countries in the form of foreign aid! :)

I was going to say were keeping up with the "jones's" but it seems were the only Jones's that honour pledges in full.
Who are the fools ?.

Aye, we should be proud - USA sends 0.00084% of its GDP in foreign aid. We send 0.00179% - More than twice as much of our GDP as a percentage!

That wasn't what the "saviour" Cameron was spouting at the last "G" meeting was it ?.

But didn't you just say *all* our money in a previous comment? Less than two thousandths of one percent doesn't quite seem like *all*, now does it. Besides the fact a lot of that money goes to fulfill desperate need (what some people would term "Christian duty"), the benefits to the UK from that money in terms of goodwill are immeasurable. Also remember that very often the large scale projects funded by foreign aid end up bringing work to British companies.

Also remember that very often the people who need our aid dont get it, while the tyrants/despots do.
