Anyone know where i could either buy a very cheap pair of car / lorry batteries or old ones that I can use for 12v lighting in my garage?

They would need to be gey cheap (i.e. free). If you are going to cycle them like you propose, then a non deep cycle battery (i.e. an engine starting battery) will be shot in no time. Given that it is probably shot already, having been evicted from the original vehicle, then it won;t be long before your lighting system has no capacity left it in of any worth!

I think it would be easier getting solor panel with led lights like the link below

Or failing that you can buy light units that are quick to fit on the wall that are powered by batterys and you can just buy a rechargable i think it would be less hastle that way.

If i had a garage next to my house i would run a cable to the garage and have lights and a power sockets so i could go out and potter about in the garage that would be nice
