They are ace lizards - incredibly intelligent and 'affectionate'. I had two and they were great - used to have one sat on each shoulder whilst I was watching telly :)

When they are adults they are less 'quick' than some other lizards can be so are ideal pets :)

They're also pretty easy to keep.

Oh and they don't grow too big either. If you get a Rankin's then they only grow to about 18 inches...

Crickets are noisy. I prefered to feed locusts :) They eat a mainly veggie (fruit and salad) diet when adults with insects just once a week.

Do pets at home also sell live locusts and crickets for feed?

How do people store the live food as im worried they will escape when i open the containers......i have the vision of crickets/locusts flying around the room x

Can i feed dry food instead of live food??? what age do you reduce the need for live food??

Im wondering do you need food for the live food:lol:
To keep them alive if you dont use them all up in one meal...
Im no expert but dont the insects have to be dusted in vitamin/mineral powders so the reptile gets the right nutrients to grow properly and reduce the risk health problems?

Ps I imagine the food is kept in the containers you buy it in...or the lock and lock boxes (you can get in Tescos baking/ kitchen stuff aisle) with airholes drilled or pierced in the lid!

You need to keep the live food in a ventilated container, something like a pal pen, the crickets or locusts need to be 'gut loaded' which means feeding them up (whatever is in the cricket will be going inside your dragon), Bug Grub is a special food for this purpose and Bug Gel is water in gel form which they also need to keep hydrated.

Before feeding to your dragon they need to be dusted in a calcium/vitamin supplement such as Nutrobal.

Young dragons need about 80% live food and 20% veg older dragons need about 20% live food and 80% veg.

All the above mentioned items can be bought in Pets at Home, ask any member of staff for advice and they will be more than happy to help. They sell hoppers (young locusts), locusts, crickets of varying sizes, mealworms and wax worms.

Have also sent you a pm.

I'd be careful with the advice given from PetsAtHome.

Unless very careful, i'd steer away from sand(i noticed neepnipper has it). Alot of the bearded dragons can accidentaly eat the sand when eating and it can build up in their stomach and can be harmful. There are other materials you could use.

If you're looking for any tips/advice I advise using the forums for bearded dragons, make sure you properly research anything as it will help in the long run and you'll be able to properly care for them. It's better getting advice from specialists.

Eddie is on calcium sand which he will slowly digest if he eats any, I am careful when feeding him, they are desert creatures after all! I would not put him on play sand which some people may suggest.

All the staff at Pets at Home who sell reptiles have gone through thorough training and exams to sell reptiles.

Just a wee question, how do you manage when going on hols?

Fish can be given slow release food and cats and dogs can go to kennels and catteries, what do you do about these, based on the fact that they need fresh food daily?

Neighbours?
We have a man in the village here that will look after pets while you are on holiday.
He looks after my cat, 2 rabbits, 2 hamsters and the fish....Poppy dog either goes to kennels or my mum and dads.
I suppose that is part of the planning to have when deciding on a pet like that!
Looking for holiday cover etc...
As well as the right conditions and food suppliers!
Would the highland petsitting service do exotics?

cameroncara

I would need to rely on neighbours as we dont have pet sitters near me.

Cheers both.

Just trying to work out all the little details before I make a final decision.

If relying on the neighbours...It might be worth asking them first!
Not everyone likes the idea of bugs or frozen mice, the reptiles might be ok...but the food not:eek:
