It went down yesterday afternoon again for a short while.

Has he tried rebooting his router?

I had a 45 minute conversation with Dave from Deli once, after we explored every possible angle as to what my connection problem could have been, he suggested a reboot and all was well.:Razz

As Kevin said a reboot might help. The problem has been at Edinburgh exchange. Sadly the same problem happened yesterday from what happened on Friday.

I rang BT yesterday as I lost my connection again and was told it would be on and off for the next 4 -5 days, this 'technical problem' covers Scotland, Northern England and Ireland.

I did say I hope I'm going to get a refund for the days broadband has been on and off and she said 'well ma'am (I think she thought I was the Queen!) leave it 2 days and if you still have problems ring back and we will sort out compensation' the thought of ringing BT again and sitting on hold for up to 1/2 hour is not very attractive!

We were off for three months during the summer, through no fault of our own,
we were promised compensation / and redress for the stress, anxiety, upset, cost to loss of business etc,
did BT, pay up?
No not a lot.
they swept it under the carpet as they do with complaints and claims the average joe blogg operator has not the wherwithall to deal with.......hope you are not holding your breath on this one.

Thanks for the replies, he has rebooted the router several times and not reconnected, he's back in caithness now and still not connected so taking his router to jektec tomorrow to be checked before he starts jumping up and down at bt/onetel

I had same problem on Saturday. Several reboots and modem would still not give me a broadband connection. I phoned BT and the guy told me to stick a pin in the little hole to do a full factory reset. It was very annoying to have to set up my wireless and everything again but it did work after the full reset.

Subject: Broadband Connectivity Issues (64232) - UPDATE

This is an update to this morning's post about a major service outage that has been mainly affecting parts of Ireland, Scotland and the North of England. In cases, these problems have been evident since before the weekend.

In the most recent service update we have received, our suppliers have advised us that they have managed to partially restore service.

Unfortunately there are still large numbers of customers believed to be affected. This problem is not specific to us and will be affecting other ISP's as well.

The list of affected area codes from the last update is as follows. Please note that we have received reports from customers with area codes not on this list that appear to be affected.

Aye but the only problem is that some 01847's are still having problems yet that code is not even listed!!!

Some people are still affected by the latest problem, I severely doubt it's a router problem.

Yeah Plusnet do provide a good status checker but I don't trust them because they're BT by a different name. I always liked the AAISP info pages myself.

http://status.aaisp.net.uk/
http://aaisp-btmso.blogspot.com/

http://status.aaisp.net.uk/?incident=635 is the direct link for this issue, the blogspot thing is just raw reports from BT's MSO mailer, it looks similar to the Plusnet stuff.

The outage affected MPLS, SDSL etc, lots of services except the 21CN network (ADSL2).

BT are blaming the hardware vendor they use for both failures, I just can't believe they don't have a redundant link and route everything through a single point of failure in Edinburgh.

What they have in place now is just a temporary fix, they'll have to rebuild the metronode so expect more issues.

My BT broadband has not been off yet either.

Apologies if this is patronising, If you didn't appear to notice the outage. It could be because of three things.

If you have dial-up or ISDN either as a primary or backup you wouldn't notice it.

If you didn't power-cycled your router during the outage it would still show as online but no traffic would be routable. When the problem eventually resolved itself it would start working again with no apparent disruption in service.

We noticed this on our line and several others, they appeared connected, but were not routable, we rebooted them and they went down

Finally your Wireless, LAN or intranet aren't the Internet, again apologies I'm only saying this because some people I know who work at the local BT call centre couldn't grasp this concept, incidentally this does not fill me with confidence, but I shouldn't be surprised.

It's entirely possible you were working legitimately, there was a 40 minute offset between Thurso going offline and Wick. BT infrastructure is akin to voodoo or sympathetic magic in many ways.

Not sure if that post was directed at me or just in general.

I'm very sure my broadband was not down, my friend called me up to ask if my broadband was working as his wasn't. While speaking to him on the phone I was surfing the web at the same time as playing Xbox live, so my broadband was definately working all weekend :D
I dont quite understand how but I also know 1 other person in Thurso that had working broadband too as he was also on Xbox live.

PS I dont have ISDN, dial up or a LAN

It all depends on your route of the exchange. I was also offline on saturday for a few hours. Im with Tiscali/TalkTalk and there was me blaming them haha...

Just because people work at the local BT call centre doesn't mean they should know how everything within BT should work. My BT broadband was off on Friday evening came back on sat morning and has been no problem since.
