One of the worlds biggest passenger jets which can carry up to 800 passengers looks as though it had difficulty in keeping one of its engines in place for a flight.

Some very relieved passengers in Singapore this morning I would think. :)

Link to the story here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/singapore/8109290/Qantas-plane-forced-to-make-emergency-landing-in-Singapore.html)
Quote, "part of one engine on the left of the plane was missing". Ooops :confused

mmmm so they can tighten up airport security to make sure no-one takes a bomb on board :) then oops we loose a bit of the engine. :~(

Having said this at least the headlines are the plane landed with all passengers and crew unharmed this could have been such a different story.

When engines decide to disintegrate they are designed to spew their guts out the back, however some pieces will tear off in other directions.

Modern Aircraft can actually take quite a bit of battering from bits and pieces hitting them.

Sphincter twitching none the less.

This is what happens when you lob a chicken into a similar engine to the one on the A380:

Chicken v Jet Engine. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-8_Gnbp2JA)

edit:
This video shows a twin engine jet taking off immediately after a birdstrike, the whole video is 9 mins but the first few seconds shows the birds cremation.
The aircraft still climbs away and then lands safely.

And there's this one - tests include 3/4 of a ton of fake hail being dumped into a running engine.

BTW has anyone noticed that every single technically-oriented video on YouTube has some dweeb commenting "Fake!" Maybe it's the same bloke on all of them...

Here's a thought, was it flying anywhere near the VOLCANO?
