We've decided we'd better get the wee collie a coat for the winter.

Last year she had an awfull time with the "wet and the cold" that she almost seized up.
Vet suspects she's got spinal arthritis so have been uping the fish oils in the diet and that seems to help.Thats not eneogh now as its "old stiffy" trying to get in the motor.

Went on a web site and the prices range from £30 to £60 for the super dooper Driza Bone.

Dont mind spending the money if it does exactly that and she keeps it on.

Anyone use a coat for their dogs?:)

Crikey, I've been buying coats my Danes for many years.
I sent off for a made to measure one from America a few years ago (only place that did the style I wanted), what a waste of money. The coat kept slipping.

I've bought quite a few from Equestrian places such as Robinsons (online) and they've worked out to be the better value. They do exactly what you want, stay put and are usually less than £15.

You could try EBay, there are real bargains there both made to measure and used.
Check out some of the styles on there and you'll probably pay no more than £15 for a brand new one.

Failing that do what I've just done - make one. I used an old coat of his to gauge the size and pattern, used a fleece blanket, cut it and then hand sewed it double layer. I even added a collar to it so his neck is covered.
I would say this has to be the biggest bargain yet as I already had the blanket and it took me a couple of hours to sew it (too lazy to get the machine out). Plus you can make it to your exact requirements.

Good Luck.

Mine wear coats, because greyhounds have thin skin and fur, so they do feel the cold.

I always put a coat on Benjy when it is wet and got one made for him which has lasted for many years.

Sarah I really like the look of the Danish Design coat.
Do you know whether it stays on okay? I got fed up with coats which kept slipping.

Yes, I've found it stays up well on Oscar (the beardie cross) :)

Thanks Sarah. However, reading the reviews on PetPlanet I see that you have to put elastic round the back legs and I've had this before and it was a nightmare as Benjy has long hair which got all tangled up in this!:confused

I am looking for coats for my lot just now and I really like these wraps as they cover their chests and belly's too but they don't seem to come in waterproof just showerproof, I suppose I could buy a waterproof mac to go over them. http://www.collarsrus.co.uk/#/fleece-wrap/4537871083

Another Dane owner..and yes 'Diesel' wears a coat,he hates the rain. We have coats from Robinsons, don't move, despite tussling and running around with our other dog, they don't rub and he stays dry and warm. Not bad prices either. He's been wearing this one for 2 years and no tears or rips.Shires equestrian and most other rug manufacturers make them too. :)

Thanks everyone I've got loads of ideas now.

Love the Beardie/cross coat but somehow just cant see our Scorrie wearing that for long.Think that front fastening would be "unfastened".
The only time he sits still is when he's sleeping and even then its not for long.:)

I have just bought two of the '3 peaks' coats in Pets at Home, they are the best coats I've ever purchased, they fit really well, they have a really wide velcro fastening on the chest and a clip fastening (like you have on dog collars) on the tummy which is adjustable, they look smart and have reflective piping down the sides, good value, too I think I paid £10.99 for the large one. They are also windproof and rainproof.

I bought a 'Hotterdog (http://www.hotterdog.co.uk/store/index.html)' fleece jumper for my spaniel and it's excellent. No fastenings, just goes on over her head and front legs, and she loves wearing it after being out running around in the wet and cold. The fleecey fabric wicks the water away from her coat and it's more effective even than a towel at drying her off. I got mine from ebay They're about £30 - £40 depending on the size.

Have two small terriers and they have coats made by Anti-mate, pops over the head, they have covering over back and from neck to mid belly then two wide bits come up to the back and secured with velcro.
The coats have a fleece lining and are pretty good at keeping the dogs dry - especially their belly which is very close to the ground, coats dry quickly and have also been in washing machine - best coats the dogs have had.
Great for over here in Stornoway - they withstand the high wind and heavy rain and dogs are happy wearing them

They were about £12 from local pet supplies shop.

That's exactly what I'm making for my Dane. I'll post piccies once it's done. Won't be quite so professional but it'll only cost me a couple of quid and a bit of time.
Happy days!

I honestly didn't realise it would be so easy. I've made a prototype lol, so now I'm having a go at the proper thing. I used the prototype to make adjustments as he wore it until I got it to function exactly as I want.
Looking forward to making his new one now but I think I'll use the sewing machine this time as much as possible instead of hand sewing.

Once that ones done I'm going to take apart his all in one PJ's that were made to order and use them as a pattern making the adjustments I need to.

Gawd, I'll die if it turns out rubbish now. However I promise to post a piccie regardless of the outcome. lol.

Have you looked at the pj's on that site porshie? I have a lovely sewing machine that sits in a cupboard but I would have no idea how to start making a dog coat, if you find it easy let me know I may commission you, would rather the cash go local.

Those are the same kind of PJ's my Dane has. They were made elsewhere though and as the fleece stretched it affected the way they fit the dog so I had to keep making alterations to them.
I shall take them apart though and use them as a pattern.

The normal double fleece coat is easier than you'd think - seriously.

I got the coat I ordered from Ebay and it's great!:D

Fits really nicely and even has as wee collar to stop Benjy's neck getting wet.

Looking forward to seeing your handiwork PP. Does fleece cope with heavy rain okay?

Red's got a Weatherbeeta Landa for going out in the rain, but the lifesavers here are the Weatherbeeta Thermo-Cell rugs which I put on after they've been for a wet walk - it's made from a wicking fabric and got Smokey's drying out time down from 2 hours to 40 minutes (from towel-dried to completely dry). Got mine from Prequestrian on eBay, who didn't charge stupid amounts of P&P for a KW postcode either.

Nope. It's an indoor coat but can be used underneath an outdoor coat for those seriously cold days we tend to get here.

Great Danes do thrive up here but not mine seemingly. lol. They always lose weight due to the cold weather.
Even indoors my dog seems to shiver. Roll on being in the house when we will have central heating.

Hmmmmm, think I'll have a go at making an outdoor coat too. He does have brilliant outdoor ones but I think I'll make one specifically for his fleece - once I've actually finished it. lol.

I'm also going to make him a huge extra deep bed to lay on. I'll buy some duvets, fold them up, sew up all the edges, make a permanent cover from cotton and then make a washable top cover from fleece. Easy!
