Cant argue with that either been using it and from the first run it picked up stuff others didnt swear by it now and advised others to use it as well

AVG or McAfee. Avoid Norton like the plague.

to be honest the best AV software i have ever used is F-Secure....this found over 70 viruses when all the others ignored them.

I definitely would NOT use Norton (always seems to miss some), AVG is highly rated. I used to use McAfee but have used Sophos for some time now - only 'cos I get it free. I tried Microsoft's new on-line AV support - where they will completely check your entire security - and it found 3 trojans that my AV and both Antispyware packages had missed. So, that is worth having a go as well. You can have more than one antispyware package but only one AV package - so make sure you remove the old one first.

Personally, I would get MS to check your system and clean it before removing the old AV. Then install the new one and at least two ASW packages. Make sure you check for updates for each package about once a week and run each at least twice a week.

Have you configured your system so that it cannot be hacked from outside? The MS security search will soon inform you of any weaknesses.

Hope it goes well. :D

Totally agree - Nod32 is excellent and very good support as well if you go to the UK site. Used to have McAfee but went right off it.

Norton hogs the processor but, to be fair, for a supposedly multi-task capable unit, the PC is as slow as a boat if you try to do more than one thing at a time anyway.

It can be hard to get shot of Norton products, once your subscription expires you get reminded to update it every day and are unable to change the timescale for the next reminder to more than one day. At least that used to be the case.

Computer Active did a survey on Anti-Virus software a while back and concluded that AVG for free was the choice, in their opinion it was not justifiable to pay for other packages for the average user. I currently use AVAST for anti-virus, it seems to update very regularly and is free. I have ZoneAlarm firewall, Spybot, Adaware and Windows Defender for Spyware. I tried Ewido, which supposedly specialises in picking up Trojans but I found that it slowed the PC performance quite markedly so it was bye-bye.

Another good mag is PC Answers. Not only do the they test lots of stuff and sound advice, they also supply a free DVD with tons of useful stuff on it.
